2002 MINI Cooper S power steering pump
2002 MINI Cooper S power steering pump
Did a search but didn't find an exact answer I was looking for.
95,000 miles
Power steering going out off and on. Seems to be making more noise when just sitting with the key on. Sounds really loud when turning the wheels (motor off).
I'm thinking I'm in need of a new pump.
How do I know if the fan is shot? It spins freely. I don't want to put a new pump in and have a dead fan kill it again.
Best place to buy a new (or reman) pump and fan for an S? I found the pump for 460 with shipping and no tax.
I don't want to buy a used one (salvaged).
Thanks

I found a remanufactured pump for $300 and a neew fan for $118 from germanautoparts.com.
I have to pay tax 'cause they're going to drop ship from CA and a little shipping cost.
Still better than the $470.00 I almost paid (for just the pump) with tax and free shipping.
Will be here next week and then it's install time.

Looking for additional aftermarket places to purchase PS pump...
I have checked with the dealers ($420-$560), as well with the germanautoparts.com people (do not stock anymore) for a replace3ment pump. I am not comfortable with a used pump from a junk yard. I will call BBManufacturing tomarrow and check with them. Does anyone have any other sources for a new or remanufactured PS pump for the MC?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Try these guys...

I don't know if they're any good, but I did come across them when I was looking for something else...

That's weird. The PS pump and fan I ordered on Friday from germanautoparts.com showed up today on my doorstep. Did you call them or just look on their site? I called them and they got it for me.
Good luck.
Good luck.
Yeah, I called them this morning to inquire about purchasing a PS pump. The salesman I spoke too said they just sold thier last one. (must have been yours!) He advised me they would not be able to get any more at this time and did not know if they would continue to carry them.
Ok, just got off the phone with BBA-reman (866-573-2740) Cost to rebuild $200 and 1-5 days working time. Lifetime warranty as long as you own the part. So I will pack it up and give them a shot... I'll post my findings once I get the part back and installed.
I'm paying attention too...
I'll keep an eye on this thread too - please reply back when you get the reman pump in and let us all know how it works out. My pump has just started to make lots of noise and occasionally feels weird, so it needs to be replaced too. I'd love a lower cost solution. I've only got 52,000 miles so I'll see if the dealer can help me out, but I doubt they will do anything for me.
52530 miles is when mine failed without any notice (not even an email. lol) , I pulled into a parking space and when I got in to back out, no PS!
I used notes someone had posted to assist me in removing the PS pump myself. Actually, after removing it once, I see how easy of a change out it really is. Prolly hardest part was not having a proper jack to get the mini up on stands. I think I will rewrite the original notes so I can add a few more indepth instructions. With more and more mini's going out of warranty, a better understanding of how to work on our own vehicle would be benificial to all....

Just finished replacing the pump. Not sure about the newer models, but on the 02 the center stud (the one between the fan studs) was making it a major pain to remove the pump. After fighting it for awhile I decided to slot the hole with a Dremel so it could just slide out. It worked perfect. Much easier to replace and go back in.
Yeah , I encountered the same thing. I was able to rotate the pump and slip it out easily enough. Not a bad idea to slot the hole as the two rear screws hold it from moving forward.
Will make it easier to replace I'm sure.

I just recently took the time (and it was a good investment) to read all eight pages of this sticky:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=73527
For those folks who own '02 thru '04 MINIs and suspect that their PS pump is acting strangely, I recommend they research this complementary information and take action to resolve their issues immediately.
Better to be safe than sorry...

Here's the summary: Many (over 20) minis have had spontaneous fires, many of which are traced to shorts at or near the power steering pump. There are lots of failure modes (bad realy, chaffed wires, internal faults in the pump) that lead to shorts that draw current, but not enough to pop a fuse (The pump takes a lot of current to run, so it's fuse it pretty high amperage). These shorts cause fires, and the car becomes a car-b-q!
I guess the lesson here is that if your pump is acting up, fix it fast.
While I sympathize with many of the posters, and K-Huevo posted photos of some of the factory ef-ups that can lead to this, I don't see how the problem is completely eliminatable. If it only takes 10 amps (for example) to start a fire, how can you prevent it when the circuit needs 20 amps to run? Seems like there are hints about protecting wear edges, making sure wires are properly routed, and that there's a minimum overhead in the fuses protecting the circuits.
The only reason I'm posting this here, is the previous post may have tons of people wasting time wading through the thread. It says nothing about where to get a pump, or how to replace it. Not to say it's not good stuff to know, but it's mostly off topic stuff from this thread.
Matt
I will say two things on this subject. My fuse did pop like I'm sure it was supposed too. It's a 15 amp fuse. also, while I was removing the pump, my hand found a VERY sharp edge extreamly close to the wiring plug of the PS pump that I plan to address before I reinstall the pump. (just to be sure it doesnt rub through the wires) Might be worth checking out if you have any reason to remove the PS pump... When I go to reinstall, I will try to get a clear pic and post it so others can identify the sharp edge under there!
BTW- Pump went out via DHL this afternoon (8/6), so count down starts today. Let see how well they do and how long it takes from start to finish.

Your summary of the other thread is relatively comprehensive and, I'm sure, appreciated by all. Thanks.
(...though I found the full history of events in other thread to be quite fascinating reading -- not a waste of time at all -- even if a bit off topic...)
So what is the outcome!?!?! Mine failed Monday, so I'm looking for less expensive options for replacing as well. Do you have the reman'ed pump back yet? If so, does it function well.
There was also mention of a write up to replace the pump. I haven't seen one, so if anyone has a write up or know of one, that would be helpful too.

Still waiting..... :impatient
I figured a few days atleast for snailmail to deliver and a few days to rebuild it. prolly get it back first of the week comming up but I think I will call to check in tomarrow. I'll give another update tomarrow night.
first the pump, now this!
My power steering on my '03 MC stopped working recently and I tried to self diagnose. Replaced the fan, but still didn't work. Dropped the car at my mechanic. Just got a call.
Not only do I need a new pump, but apparently, the electrical connection for the pump corroded and so it has entirely rotted. And MINI does not sell the individual connector. If my guys can't rebuild it, then I'm buying a whole new wiring harness! Yikes!!
If anyone has suggestions, let me know. I'm trying to save a bit of money. But I'm not sure how easy it would be to put in the pump myself. I know that my mechanic will have to do all the electrical stuff for me.

Your only getting the starter/ps subharness, so it's not hat bad...It carries alot of current, so if your going to do a repair, it better be a good one or else you'll be buying another pump and harness again.
