Well, my first problem with the car after a wonderful 8,000 miles.
My turn signal indicators quit working today, along with the high beam indicator light in the tach. The actual outside signals (and high beams) are working, but the "tick tock" of the signal relay and the indicator light in the tach display are out. Also, now when you exit the car, the warning bell sounds, like when you leave the key in the ignition or you've left your lights on---but this is after the key is removed and the lights are off.
No biggie I thought until...
I turned the garage light out and there was my instrument panel glowing that wonderful backlight orange. So now at 3 o'clock in the morning I get out my 10mm wrench and disconnect the battery so I'll have juice to start the MINI in the morning.
(I checked all the fuses, I checked their continuity with an ohmmeter.) So it's not a fuse issue.
Any ideas anyone???

I had this happen to me! I turned the key off an on (pre-ignition) a few times, pulled it out, did it again. Nothing. Then I thought it might have been the fuse, took all fuses out, one at the time (the ones inside the car, not in the engine compartment). I don't know which one did it, but it went to normal when I was done. Never happend again. Hope this helps.

Question for you:
Have you noticed lately creaking sounds coming from the steering column when making 1/4 turns of the steering wheel either wheel?
You could have a collapsed upper steering column bearing and a defective rotary coupler. The rotary coupler is the device inside the steering column that allows the airbag, cruise control and stereo buttons to remain connected when you turn the wheel.
Most 2002 MINIs and some early production 2003's have DEFECTIVE UPPER STEERING COLUMNS. I highly recommend for you to have the dealer take a look at the car and if necessary replace the upper and lower steering column assembly with the new revised part that has been in production since March or April '03. If the dealer has the new replacement column it should take him anywhere bwteen 2 to 3 hours to replace.
The new Steering wheel does not longer has the collapsed bearing problem and due to the redesign made to the part the steering feel and precision are much better than the old part.
It should be done under warranty. Make sure to request a loaner vehicle for the day.

Well guys and gals; Here's an update.
After leaving my battery disconnected all night. (because the panel lights wouldn't shut off.)
I go out this morning, re-connect the battery and wouldn't you know it?
The instrument panel lights don't light up when I connect the battery.
I climb into the car, start it up and BINGO! The turn signals work, and the high beam indicator works! So.... I drive around all day today and it's working fine.
So a few comments;
1.) Vespa; You win your bet. When this happened it was a rainy day here in Florida. Maybe what ever caused this is a "wet" issue and it had time to dry out.
2.) Cooper4Us; Thanks for the heads up on the steering column bearing issue.
I was not aware of this and when I take the car in for the 10K service I will make sure they either check to see I have the mod, or put the correct one in.
Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions---I love the way this website and group hang together.... MOTOR ON!!!!

This is not surprising to me for the simple fact that the turn signals, the dash lights, the outside lights, everything... are all controlled by and driven from that infamous body control computer. Disconnecting the battery for a period of time 'resets' it. I think a reset button should be standard equipment on this car.

Yeah if they put a reset button so that we can reboot the MINI's computer, Hmm, did Microsoft have a hand it writeing the software? Does that mean you would have to reactiviate the the computer with MSFT at Redmond everytime you did a major upgrade, I think I missplaced the Software key. So that explains the studder, its the MSblaster worm attacking the MINI's computer. Someone just threw an Apple at my Mini, and now I gotta go and clean up the mess. ..
