The PS pump seems to be noticeably louder recently. Just the last few days, not coincidental with open window weather. Should I expect a failure soon?

If you've got the time, you may want to run it by the dealer to get it checked out before it gets worse. You know the old "ounce of prevention" adage....

I'm with MINI USA. I'm sorry to read about your power steering pump. If you'd like, we can lend a hand to make arrangements with your MINI dealership to check this out. You can let us know at 866.ASK MINI.

My PS went out more than a week ago and was hauled into the dealership. There was a smell of rubber and black soot covered the engine compartment. A week later the dealership called and stated they were replacing the PS pump because they "think" that may be the problem. If it is the PS pump it gave me no warning that it was going.

I had my power steering pump replaced a couple of months ago after it failed completely. After a week at the dealers (and a new pump) I was back on the road. Then just the other day the p/s pump started to make some noise so after checking the fluid level (which was empty after 2k miles) and adding a 1/2 to a pint of fluid all is well for the time being. Be sure to check your fluid often. I wouldn't be surprised if I have to replace the pump again in the near future (or maybe the rack is leaking)

All is not well on the power steering front. In less than a week all the p/s fluid has disappeared from the reservoir. I had to add another 1/2 to 3/4 pint of fluid. Guess its back to the dealer. Lets see if it takes a week this time around.

How very nice of you to help this poor gent book his car in at his local service agents.

Wish you could do something worth while with our stumbling and yoyoing!!

I'm astounded by your ignorant attitude to this problem - Mini USA

Well the rack finally let go leaking all the power-steering fluid out on the driveway. I dropped the Mini off at the dealer and they had it fixed within a couple days. The service was much better this time around than when I had the p-steering pump replaced which took over a week. So far so good.
