check engine light keeps coming on
hi i had my check engine light come on, the gas cap wasn't fully tight simple fix so now the light comes on again a few days after i re tightend the gas cap the light stays on now after about 5 times the light goes out i drive a few days and the light comes back on could this be the gas cap not sealing properly this is a pain is there a fix for this or do i need a new cap?

i started with a check gas cap light which turned into SES-large evap system leak. I just put the new filler cap on tonight didn't have a chance to clear the code and give it a test drive yet. A new filler cap is around $15 and it took 30 seconds to pull the rubber hanger out of the old and put it in the new. Well worth it to me, rather do that then have the dealership tell me.

Joenzy i ordered the filler cap here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.com/classicauto
Please note you'll have to go to www.realoem.com and get the part number but they were easy to deal with.
The new cap solved my problem. If you had a check cap light followed by an SES light. Run the code if it's an evap leak you need a new cap. My cap still clicked into place, but comparatively the new cap feels tight before i hear the click. The old one went on super easy, you could almost tell it wasn't sealing right.
scotth42, it depends what the code says. I believe in the mini's they have individual and specific codes for the pre and post cat O2 sensors. If it's throwing an O2 sensor code that probably the problem. What you have to figure out is what cause the sensor to go so you don't burn out the new one. The sensor should run you around $150, it takes a wrench to remove and has a plug connector so long as you don't buy a universal. All said it should only take 30min to replace.

Mariner and all, I had a chance to get the error code read,
bad O2 sensor. I made a quick trip to Warwick and they took care of it.
I also had an aux input installed.
Now I have 16 gigs of audio crack to listen to.
I'd like to say a quick thanks to all on the board.
This is a great site and a very supportive community.

Got an SES this week and ran a scan with my AutoXray. P2096 after cat O2 sensor. NAPA (OE Bosch #13878, $165 delivered). It lasted 73k so that's not to bad running on WalMart 93 octane (now with up to 10% ethanol!! Whoo-Hoo!!). The good thing about it being an after cat sensor is that it doesn't affect how the car runs at all. Just a SES nag until it's fixed. Will change it next week, hopefully that's the end of the SES thing for a while.

I heard several different things regarding P2096. Smoke test, Some thing in the rear. Exhaust gasket, O2 sensor. I have a diagnotic check tool. I replaced the exhaust gasket. (cheapest) The next best guess would be the O2 sensor I guess. I also heard there could be other things that could damage the O2 sensor. How do you find out what that is if the diagnostic tool only comes up with P2096.
