Didn't realise it started to rain, but water didn't drip into the car! PHEW. But when i tried to close it, it popped back up. I had to try 3 times before it would stay closed.

Go figure!
It was letting you know it was upset with you!

I'm going to have the Dealer perform the TSB on Molly on her Semi-Annual Visit. She has not opened less than a Hand Full of times. I had asked my SA if they had a TSB on the Sun Roof, she said yes, and also said no problem on performing it on Molly!!

During the last service that worked, I was told the trick is that the sunroof has to be completely removed and adjusted, lubricated etc. In my previous visits they lubed and adjusted without completely removing it. I am not sure if mine was just dumb luck or whether there was some truth to the need to completely removed the sunroof.

The service manager said there was a service bulliten that specified this process. If you want you can call the service manager that finally helped me. He is at Crown Mini in Richmond, VA (804) 346-0812. Good Luck.
Thanks for your sympathy. Because I was out for the past month, the MCS got dropped off at the dealership today. They said it will take a couple of days to fix, so this time they are probably doing the glass removal, etc. Finally, I got a loaner...a black MCS auto with 16mi on it. It's a much better A/T than the Mercedes and downshifts when you slow down (in sport mode).

I'll keep you all posted...

Another update

...just heard back from Morristown Mini. They did the campaign and the sunroof still binds. So they are now contacting Mini for direction. Probably getting a new sunroof.

I'm really glad they are not blowing me off on this one. Way to go Morristown Mini and Mike my service advisor!

Molly went to Rasmussen today to get Front Brakes, Hubby mentioned a rattle in the Secret Compartment Door (see Rattles Thread), that was fixed as well as the Sun Roof.

SA (Ann) said that the Sun Roof was mis-aligned in 4 places, here is a quote from what the Tech found and fixed..."Verified, found Gears Binding in Upper Movement, Inspected, found Rear Glass adjusted to Low and Binding on Sunroof Seal, adjusted Rear Glass, Lubricated Seal, Tested, Sunroof fully operational at this time."

Kudos to Rasmussen and Ann for taking such GREAT care of Molly, she was noticeably quieter and smoother on the way home.

I had Johnny Max into Rasmussen a few weeks ago to fix my seat after an accident ( I was rear ended. Long story). I told them I had "that sunroof problem" and they fixed it right up! No greasy fingerprints or anything! I have had zero problems with the sunroof since then.

Well...here's what they did new: new seal around sunroof

Well...it took a week for BMW to finally give a next step. So they replaced the outer seal. Mike says that this is what they want to do. It'll be hot the next few days so let's see what happens... He thinks if it happens again then they'll put in an entire new sunroof assembly.

I have the same situation when it's hot. I just push it up from the inside with my big manly hand and voila! it opens.

I have tried several different types of lube for the tracks because there is this squeal/screech when closing my sunroof. It only happens when closing however. When opening, it slides just fine, closing however is another story.... (Squeal/screech and shake....) is this going to need the "adjustment" that only the dealer can make? How do you adjust the sunroof?

I wonder if they finally came out with a solution. I had the issue on my '08 but not once on my '09.

Perhaps they changed materials used.

Hope ya'll get it fixed... it was a definite annoyance.

Sunroof opening problems a know problem by Mini

I was told by my dealer that orginally Mini had wind noise problem so they changed the fitment of the sunroof. I have had my adjusted and lubed and they stated that this would correct 95 Percent of the Minis but it didn't fix mine.

I got mine fixed. It turns out that the glass parts were not aligned properly so they just aligned it and now I have a sunroof that works and a far less noisy ride

I got mine fixed (lubed and realigned) and the rear panel started loudly squeaking over bumps. I raised the front edge a little after loosening the torx screws along the inside rail, and now all is quiet again.

Mine was "fixed" last week. Now it fails to open when just moderately hot rather than really hot.

Sunroof not opening on hot day

It is a know issue from Mini- it seems that Mini has made the seal so tight that as the glass expand on a hot day it causes too much resistance. Adjustment and lube fixes most 0- but not mine.

YES!!! I got a brand new sunroof installed today!! I works! The last month, my sunroof would barely open and close and would make the worst noise ever.

Over 2 years of complaining, 7+ times to "fix it", but it's finally done.
Good luck everybody.

Scott.

This problem has been around for a very long time -- I found this out when I searched a few different forums including this one.

Mine did it for the first time yesterday. Add this to the list of problems with my 3 month old Clubman. Man, this car is really not made very well in a lot of ways. I won't recommend this car to anyone, though it's fun to drive at least.

^sorry to hear that yours has the problem too. as it begins to warm up I bet this thread will get a revival goin', unfortunately.
They've already adjusted mine sunroof, but it hasn't helped. I don't want to make the trip back to the dealer any more for "fixes" that don't "fix." I just learn to live with it, unfortunately.

Frustrating that I paid over $32k for this car and it's like it was built by Buick in the 80s.

Quirky? Nope, just crappy!

Headlands, do you try to open the sunroof right away or after the AC has run for about 5 minutes or so?

It happened twice since yesterday and both times it was right away after starting the car. After a few tries it finally creaks open.

Maybe this is a just a clever new design of sunroof that requires 5 minutes of AC time?

I usually keep mine closed, but I tend to open it only after the AC has run a bit, especially if she's sat in the sun for a while. I did read about this issue, before I ordered and also the scoop issue, and I did read somewhere that allowing the inside temp to cool down might help, so that's what I've done and so far it's been working. Hope you find a happy balance!

Sunroof Trouble

Sorry to hear about your trouble. I purchased the first clubman s in my city in 2008 and I had the same problem. It took quite a while for a fix but the dealer finally did get a good fix. The fix requires that they remove the glass and reset the alignment. I went in twice before and the dealer tried to add grease which does not work alone.

My car has not been perfect but I love it and would buy it again in a second. There are a few items I would agree are a little cheap but I have driven Hondas, BMWs and Mercedes for years and this car has a more solid feel than the Honda and is pretty close to par with our BMW in terms in solid feeling doors and ride.

We also have two kids and two dogs and run the clubman pretty hard. It has held up very well for us and we have saved thousands on gas over 2008 and 2009. Sorry about your troubles but check with the dealer and see if he has the full sunroof fix.

( FYI -- The sunroof fix that I had done last summer is still working fine. I test it at least every two weeks just out of my own curiosity. It worked for several hot months last year and I will post if there is a problem when it gets hot this year. Now if they could just fix the iPhone Y cable I would truely be happy. )

Hi everyone-
My sunroof is also opening slightly, then slamming shut when it is super hot outside and the car is parked in the sun. And by super hot, I mean 114 degrees or so. Which happens all the time in Phoenix AZ, where I live. I have had my car in twice before for this same problem- the first time they lubed and adjusted the roof, and the second time they lubed and adjusted the roof, and re initialized it. The problem still exists so I am waiting for the dealer to call me back so we can discuss what they are going to do next. I have had other issues with my car, and my advice is make sure to keep taking the car back to the dealer so they can document the problems for you. This will give you legal recourse and obligate them to fix the problem later on, even if your warranty has expired. If my dealer is able to resolve the problem with my roof, I'll let you all know what they actually did....
