Those interested in part numbers:
54-10-3-448-675 DRIVE UNIT FOR SUNROOF: 676010
54-10-2-758-294 FRAME PANORAMIC ROOF: 541040
54-10-2-755-849 BLIND FOR SUNROOF, REAR: 543010
Also had Oil and Filter Change:
11-42-7-557-012 SET OIL-FILTER ELEMENT: 114010
07-51-0-017-866 OIL 5W30 SYNTHETIC: 832511
83-12-0-405-186 WINDSHIELD WASHER ANTIFREEZE: 831510 (this is interesting since I had just added almost 1 gallon of RainX washer fluid two days before going in!??)
64-31-9-127-516 MICROFILTER/ACTIVATED CARBON: 643010
Last page of service report states that - DIAGNOSTIC OF THE SUNROOF NOT OPENING, THE TECH FOUND THAT THE SUNROOF NOT OPENING ISSUE HAS CAUSED THE SUNSHADE TO BECOME INOPERABLE (guess that is why the rear shade was replaced.)

I just had my Clubman's sunroof replaced at Habberstad Mini. They had tried the "lube and adjust" a couple of months ago, but that didn't seem to help much. The new unit's operation is much smoother, and Habberstad did their usual neat and thorough job, without a single fingerprint on the headliner or scratch on the roof.
By the way, the sunroof + installation cost is over $2,000.00, so get it fixed under warranty if it's sticking.

Wow.. that is an expensive fix. I will have to test my sunroof more vigorously to make sure that last adjustments they made continue to work.

The first round of changes were the lube and adjust and that didn't seem to do much at all. The second time I took it to the dealer they completely removed the glass and then readjusted the rails and then reinstalled the glass. This seems to have worked. I had this service done about two months ago and so far no problems.

Thanks for the tip miniclubman I will keep my eyes out for any more issues that creep up and hopefully get it resolved before my warranty lapses.

Cheers

The part number was 54-10-2-758-294 "Frame Panoramic". I don't know whether that includes the glass, but it retails for $1,368.54! Labor was $563.50.

I brought mine in for this problem a few weeks ago. Said they needed to order parts. Brought it in on 24 July. Told they only needed to do a special lubrication, new MINI procedure. Next day, problem occurred again. Called on Monday. SA said they will lubricate a second time. I plan to talk to the manager about it. I will make a lemon claim if they cannot resolve it.

Sorry to hear that Jakeman.. I had the same run around with several visits. My final "fix" was done a few months back and the sunroof has worked great ever since. The summer heat at 90+ has not been a problem and so I am hopeful that they did find a solution.

During the last service that worked, I was told the trick is that the sunroof has to be completely removed and adjusted, lubricated etc. In my previous visits they lubed and adjusted without completely removing it. I am not sure if mine was just dumb luck or whether there was some truth to the need to completely removed the sunroof.

The service manager said there was a service bulliten that specified this process. If you want you can call the service manager that finally helped me. He is at Crown Mini in Richmond, VA (804) 346-0812. Good Luck.

Hello from Australia :D

My 09 JCW has been doing this from the first few weeks of ownership. It was the worst when it was very hot (i.e.110+ deg F), to the extent that the "push up fix" didn't work. Then it started behaving badly even at 60 deg. I sent it to BMW to get fixed recently, and they seemed to sort it out. I'm going to wait for this summer to see how it copes.

I guess I consider ourselves lucky because we have not yet encountered any problems/issues with the pano sunroof since purchase in May. It gets very hot here in the New Mexico heat with several days 100+ and still no issues. I am wondering if this is something that is common to all sunroofs or just some of them?

I had my Clubman in for an oil change three weeks ago and the dealer removed and lubed the sunroof. So far so good, 'tho it has not been hotter than the mid 80's. I have made a point of testing the sunroof during the hottest part of the day and it opens okay. That said, I have a couple of years left on my warranty and will press for a permanent solution if the problem recurs.

MINI has been aware of this issue for some time, and I wouldn't be surprised if they've done some design changes to the sunroof mechanism. Those who have had a complete new sunroof casette installed appear to have better results than those who've had the "lube and adjust" service. It may be that the MINIs rolling off the assembly line now have a better design.

I am assuming that this is the case with ours. No problems and I hope that it stays that way as we love the Pano Sunroof!

My 09 MCS w/ a build date of March stick in temps above 85. I don't think they fixed anything at the factory.

My Cooper is a 2010, and the sunroof does strange things. Sometimes I open it and it sticks a bit - then opens completely. It doesn't stop at the "vent" position.

I can hear a slight "crack" when it does this, too.

If you hold the switch while the sunroof is opening, it won't stop in the vent position. It only stops if you press and release.

My original sunroof (before replacing see top of page) would make "clunking" sounds when it closed. the new roof makes no sounds and seems "smoother" in operation. An interesting note: the old roof had one touch vent, the new one does not...probably programming when replaced?

Went it to get my 09 MCS fixed (build date late march, pickup 5/1). Sunroof was sticking and here what was done.

Tech removed sunroof glass. Performed service bulletin SI M54 03 08. Removed both sun roof glass, lubricated all guide tracks and channels with Kluberplex grease as per bulletin. Measured distance between sliding channels and edge of roof. Adjusted as per bulletin. Reinstalled both glass pieces. Installed new hardware. Reinitialized sunroof operation after repairs. Tested-good. After repairs sunroof operates with in specs.

Parts used Qty: 12 Pt # 51-16-2-756-511 Fillister Head Scre
So far it seems to be working pretty well.

So if i park in the shade it doesn't stick, but today when i was parked in the sun in the 90+ degree weather it stuck again. Took 3 tries before it opened. :-/

I had my sunroof fixed yesterday - I haven't really tested it yet but a few things I've noticed:

1) it is much quieter.
2) when I close it, it no longer drops into the track - it just quietly closes.

From my report:

"Found the sunroof glass was adjusted too low and the sunroof would not open in high temps. Removed both sunroof glass panels. Lubricated the sunroof guiderails and all parts listed in lubrication procedure. Adjusted the sunroof glass panels as described in SIM 54 03 08. Reinitialized the sunroof motor. Operated sunroof 5 times to distribute lubrication. Sunroof is now functioning normally".

I can vouch for the lubrication since there are fingerprints all over my black roof in some type of grease. I washed the car today and they're still there. I have to try something to remove them but figured windex was bad (ammonia product). Other ideas?

A one step cleaner/wax (like Meguiars) should work if they're just greasy fingerprints.

I left my car out at the back of the office with the roof on tilt mode.
Didn't realise it started to rain, but water didn't drip into the car! PHEW. But when i tried to close it, it popped back up. I had to try 3 times before it would stay closed.

Go figure!
