I'm not sure of any technical requirements other than a wrench capable of removing the bolts. I forget what size it requires, and I'm not sure if the bolts need to be replaced afterwards (Don't think so).

Why do you want to change it, leaking?

+1 assuming you have a cooper.

A little more involved with the S model.

You'll probably need the specific sequence in which to tighten down the valve cover bolts and a torque wrench.

Tightent the bolts from the center and work your way outwards, like this

7 5 1 3 9

10 4 2 6 8

I don't use any specific torque, just the German torque measurement called "Goodentite"

You have to remove your intercooler though on an "S". Not difficult, just take your time...and replace the spark plug tube seals also(probably the most difficult part). Grab hold of part of the spk. plug tube seal with a pair of large channel locks and lever them out. Use a seal driver or something similar to get them in the valve cover all the way.

Tube seals!! How could I have forgotten this!! Back to the dealership.
I recently purchased a 2002 MCS, which is showing a bit of a leak from the valve cvr as well. Some FIPG and a new gasket will fix that!!

you need to buy new tube seals when doing this job on the S? I am in the same situation almost.... just bought an 02 mcs with a leaky valve cover gasket...

i take it this is a common problem with this car?

Not a common problem, but new tube seals with any OH cam engine of this type are a must.

I don't think it is a common problem. But if the cover is removed a couple of times by a previous owner and the gasket is not replaced, it could cause leaks.
