I upload the attachment of the photo but it doesn't seem to appear when I hit preview post. This may be the third time this post shows up. Basically it's the second circle on the tachometer that spells brake. The icon shows the car on the lift. My car is 1 2008 with 44,000 miles.

Thanks!

Does anyone know if sensors can be swapped.

I had the same problem trying to reset sensors after I put on Stoptech slotted rotors. Performance pads don't use sensors but the front will not reset can I swap the rear sensor to the front in order to reset timer? Are they unique units or the same exact sensor? I hate to buy a sensor to reset car and then zip tie it out of the way because I can't use it with my pads. Any ideas would be helpful. The problem I see is if I pull the rear sensor to reset the front will the disconnected rear trip the computer on the rears while I reset the fronts. Any ideas would be appreciated.

did you toss the worn sensor? if not just disect it and connect the two wires together. The sensor is just a simple loop of wire. it activates when the tip wears off enuf for the wire to break creating an open circuit. you need to close this circuit and an easy way is to just splice the old sensor, esp' if you don't plan to use the sensors in the future. you need to close the circuit to make all the warnings go away . .

I did not try that. My mechanic pulled the sensor and tried to close the loop with a piece of wire and it did not work so I assumed the current needed to pass through the sensor tip. The sensor shows no apparent wear at all. I'll try that though and re post. Thanks

The sensor was worn. I happened to be in Grand Rapids for a driving school at Grattan Raceway so I stopped by the dealer. Tech said sensor was shot. It was only $35 so I bought a new one and zip tied it out of the way. Brakes re-set with no problem. Thanks for the help.
Now I have deal with a claim in defect of manufacture! Rust pop on my barn door. :(
This only a three year old car.

I replaced front/rear pads along with both sensors on my 2007 MCS last weekend. Good thing I ordered new sensors they were trashed don't even know how they were still working.

Twister....thanks for post, worked perfectly just like you stated.

different Procedure for reset.

I had my brakes on my 07 R56 cooper done this week by an independent mechanic. He downloaded the following procedure from his database. (alldatapro.com)

1) Sit in car, close door and turn ignition on.
2) Press and hold trip reset button for 10 seconds.
3) The upper display in the tach will be illuminated with a service item. the lower display in the tach will indicate the remaining time or mileage left for that service item. Pressing the BC (board computer) button repeadtedly on the end of the turn signal stalk wil allow the display to scroll through all of the condition based service items.
4) to reset, press and hold the bc button again and the lower screen will indicate reset.
5) Pressing the bc button only resets the item displayed in the upper window only. Repeat the procedure for any additional service reset needs.

This seems alot simplier than the one posted. I had him reset the brakes and oil indicator. It did work just fine, although new brake sensors are required for the brakes.

Just would like to thank the OP for this very helpful thread. I left the car running, held the trip reset for several seconds, and used the turnsignal stalk button for the rest, reset front brakes, oil change, and brake fluid. This is WAY easier to get to the service info than just using the stalk button by itself (and you can't reset that way either).

Brake Wear Light and Sensor reset

This post was very helpful to understanding the code resets.

In doing the brakes on the wife's R56 for the first time - I learned a few things.

1) the caliper is a screw piston type and needs to be screwed back into place. A small pair of needle nose vice grips worked perfectly.

2) the wear sensor may be clipped at the wire just above the brake pads. Splice the two wire together and the sensor is "permanently repair" or removed from the system. **WARNING** you no longer have wear sensors at this point, but if you are smart enough to change your brakes, you should be smart enough to monitor them.

3) The timer reset procedure if done late in the countdown will not reset the counter. TO REMEDY THIS - find the small blue wire coupling at the end of the sensor wire. The right rear is approximately 12" forward of the wheel well on the lower side. It is possible to access this without taking any body parts off while you have the wheel off the vehicle. Unclip the the sensor and reattach. This will trick the computer into thinking you replaced the sensor. Then the timer reset will work perfectly.

Great post. I had no problem resetting my indicator when I replaced the front pad wear sensor.

Last weekend I replaced the rear pads, 2008 S hatchback, 68K miles. Had no problem with the pads but the sensor was another story. The replacement sensor had a black connector body. The one I removed was white. Inside the connector body are 2 plastic tines for orientation. The one I bought was oriented different than the OEM. I cut the two sensors and spliced the new one with the old connector body.

I thought everything was ok when I put it back together. In disconnecting the pad sensor I also disconnected my ABS sensor. I reconnected everything and noticed the ABS light came on when I turned car on. Reconnected the ABS sensor correctly and light went out. before reseting the brake indicator my buddy and I tested the brake job and everything drove fine. Tried resetting and couldn't??

I then noticed that the sensor had popped out from between pads and end was broke off. I tried twisting the ends together, tapping and tie wrapped out of the way. Still can't reset light? Does the sensor have to be a specific resistance?? Any help would be appreciated. I plan to reorder a new sensor and verify that will allow me to reset light.

No I can confirm there's nothing magical about the sensor. I just cut the wire about 2 inches from the plug and soldered the ends together (and tape up well; bare copper won't last long in salt-water!) You definitely can't reset the light without that connection.

^^^Just another vote of confidence for this procedure. I had the front brake discs/pads/sensor replaced at the dealer under the service plan but they forgot to reset the CBS. This method worked as advertised.

I prefer to use the method outlined in post #59. Are you saying there is an even shorter way to do it than that? Or are you referring to the OP?

Is there a way to change the oil change interval on your own? Mine is still set for 13000 miles.

According to here:
http://r56mini.com/tisdocs/RA%20CBS%20reset.pdf

The statutory intervals specific to individual countries are coded with the diagnosis system.
So I think you need a computer to change intervals

Also
The brake pads can only be reset with a new brake pad wear sensor
Although I don't think this is stricktly true. Assuming the sensors are not damaged or worn, the sensors need to be disconnected and then the car assumes they were replaced. However using the same sensors year after year, would likely result in a false brake warning, which is not ideal and may result in ignoring a real fault.

There must be something different with Gen II cars. The original procedure posted here did not work on my car after repeated attempts. My car displayed the VIN prior to going through the display check procedure. But the procedure in post #59 worked like a charm for my car, 2009 JCW clubman and was much quicker.

I had replaced front and rear brake pads and installed new sensors prior to ever getting a service warning. Switched the pads out to EBC ceramic to cut down on the brake dust.

The OP's post #1 did the trick for me. Driving me nuts why the damn light wouldn't go off. I even made a dummy shorted-sensor out of the old one to double check that I hadn't broken the new one while installing it.

Thanks!
