Engine is louder inside cabin since Dual Mass Flywheel was replaced

This is a weird one...

I had my Dual Mass Flywheel replaced a couple of days ago and ever since the the engine noise inside the cabin is a lot louder. I can even hear the transmission when I change gears and it's a lot louder when I start the car, too.

Is there some sort of plate of gasket that the tech might have missed. I don't want to take it all the way back to the dealer (2 hour drive for me) unless I really have to.

Any help is much appreciated!!!

The ratteling is gone from the defective DMF, but it seems a lot louder inside the cabin now.

Sweet, you should be pleased and embrace all the corporeal sensations of motoring.
When I had to have my spec clutch replaced with the OEM clutch kit, the engine got quieter, the gear box doesn't chatter anymore, and clutch movement has become too smooth.

My car (03 MCS) has been "louder" after the clutch, throw out bearing, bushings, etc were replaced at 52Kmiles. I noticed it right after I took the car from the dealer. Next day I went in and did a test drive with the shop foreman; he listened and just looked at me like I was a crazy person.

Since then the noise has been the same (did not increase - except for the addition of vibration damper chatter which is gone now by replacing it with an updated one). I have now almost 30Kmiles on the clutch and nothing has been problematic - except the cabin noise of course

Good luck!

There has to be a reason though. I wonder if there is some kind of "seal" they have to break when the remove the tranny? What about the shifter, is there any sort of plate below it that has to be removed when they remove and replace the tranny? This is just too odd to me. I noticed it as soon as I picked up the car. I can also hear a whining noise at about 75-80 now (not the supercharger or the windshield).

When the subframe was lowered, if the steering column ujoint wasn't taken loose, or it got hung up on the upper steering shaft, it can pull loose the boot that covers the firewall. Real PITA to get back in right. If you look at the steering shaft through the interior, follow the steering shaft where it goes out the firewall and check to see the boot is in place and not loose.

Chad,
Are you talking about the black plastic piece that isolates the cabin from the engine compartment at the location where steering column goes through?

That's what it could be. It sounds like something wasn't put back into place. Some kind of boot or cover. What do you mean by the steering shaft? Should I look from the inside of the cabin where the steering wheel connects?

Was it replaced by another Dual mass or a solid flywheel? A dual mass flywheel is a very complicated part. One of its main functions is to dampen vibration as well as provide some torque limiting by slipping when the cars torque limits are exceeded. This is all done with rubber. Remove tthe rubber, remove any ability to absorb noise and vibration. Had you gone with a lighter, solid flywheel you may have had all sorts of transmission noise. nature of the beast....Are you sure they used OEM parts?? Kinda sounds like it might not be a dual mass unless they screwed something else up..left out a seal or something as noted above..

Yes, it is a boot that surrounds the steering shaft where it goes through the firewall. Basically, if you look down where your gas pedal is, then look up where the carpet and interior go up towards the bottom of the dashboard, you'll see a shaft that comes from your steering column about 1" in diameter. Just follow it where it goes through and you'll see the boot. You can't miss it.

The boot is in the bottom of this diagram as Part # 6

I really think that's what it is since I can hear all kinds of noise from the engine/transmission I never heard before. Is this something I can fix or do I have to take it back to the dealer?

I have a copy of the work that was completed and it's the (new version) of the DMF. I really think its that boot Chad mentioned. I'll check it out when I get home later tonight...

This is bugging the heck out of me!!!

I hope that's what it is. It looks like it connects from the inside of the cabin?

Trust me, this is something you'll want to take back to them. Real PITA as I said before. But do yourself a favor, check it, and verify that it is the culprit so you can show them.

That plastic part Chad indicated was "completely" off when I picked up my car after a repair (it was literally just dangling in its place). When it is not installed it feels like you are sitting in the engine compartment. It was VERY loud... I took it back to them for reinstalling it... They said "uhh, sorry, we forgot to put that back on". They did the install from inside the cabin. It reduced the noise significantly, but it was still louder than before in the cabin. Hope yours is this because it's an easy fix compared to figuring out a clutch or tranny noise.
Good luck!

It's a two piece boot....If it went on that easy, either they don't have it on right or I'm doing it wrong.....One boot wraps around the other, but when you go to push it through the firewall the two seperate. Usually, I would take some weatherstrip adhesive and glue the two boots togeter, let sit and then install.

CHAD IS THE MAN!!!! That's EXACLTY what it is!!! I'm not going to attempt to connect the two boots (looks like loads of fun). Gonna call the dealer now to break the news. Thanks again Chad!!! I thought it might be something silly like this.

Well... it did go in very easy, but it doesn't mean that they got it right. Is there a picture of it somewhere showing how it is supposed to look if installed "correctly"?
Thanks!

I should try removing that boot or disloging it slightly. I want more noise.
