I HATE my glovebox! Any fit-it tips?

Ever since I bought my used 03 MCS I have had this stupid issue with the glove box. When I would go over a big bump the darn thing would pop open. Then I took the glove box out to rout wires for my Sirius radio and painted the dash. I put everything back together perfectly. All the screws went in there place from the factory. And now the glove box pops open even easier and more often!! I close it tight. Checked all the screws and it's still an issue. I read and talked to people who say this is a common problem. So I went to the dealer and they said the same thing. Told me to go to the service place (which I hate) and they said the way to fix it is to get a new 350.00 glove box!!! 350.00 to fix this stupid problem????

Anyone out there figure out how to fix this issue yourself? Maybe put a tighter spring in the latch? Modify the latch in an way as to fix this problem? I will not spend 350.00 to fix this stupid problem.

Try using electrical tape and tape the "hook" part, which snaps into the dash. My glove box had a very annoying rattle...so I used tape to make the latch bigger and fit tighter, seemed to work. Try it!

My girlfriends mini did that all the time. We took it to the dealer and all they did was tighten something. I can't remember what it was, but it hasn't done it since. Is there something you may have overlooked? There could be something that's not too obvious that could be adjusted/tightened.

No.. The screws that hold the glove box in the dash aren't even close to the latch or anything.. It's done it since I got the car also. Just seems like the little arm that latches to the top of the box isn't strong enough or isn't grabbing like it should. Design flaw IMO

Is there anything in the latch that can be adjusted/tightened? You might be able to bend the hook/rod/whatever, so it fits tighter. I don't have my mini nearby so I can't go out and look for myself.

Yes there is. Mine did the same thing. I also have a 03 MCS. The latch is adjustable, you can move it back and forth, there are little teeth that hold it to its base. I removed my whole glovebox and removed the latch base. I actually ground down the base alittle so it would hang lower. Has not been an issue since . It is not a lockable glovebox BTW. Is yours?

JIMINNI, can you tske and post a photo of the location where you can adjust the latch? Can it be adjusted without removal of the glovebox?

No. Mine is the regular non locking box. I will look into moving the latch around. When you lift he handle on the outside of the box it lifts that little arm inside the box.. That arm doesn't seem to be grabbing the top part as well as it should. Like the spring is too weak or it just needs to be adjusted. I didn't notice anything to adjust. I will go look again. The one from the dealer to "fix" this problem has a lock on it but after you spend 350.00 you also have to have a key made for it.

The crossbar that the latch/hook engages is adjustable. You'll have to hang upside down to see the two screws that hold it in place. Move it toward the rear of the car for more 'bite'.

My new '03 had the same problem and they adjusted it under warranty. Problem solved. (I don't know what they did--but they didn't replace the unit).
