Definately not a normal sound. Good move taking it in for expert evaluation. Is it grinding more on upshift or downshift? Does it matter if you double de-clutch or not? Worse under hard acceleration?

What is the MFG date? Some early Non-S Coopers had cable issues with some reported post fix problems.

Only 3rd gear? No problems in others?

Did you have some "event", like a badly missed shift, with third?

You've got the clutch, linkage and tranny to consider. Either way it's a warranty issue.

See if you can get them to install a Quaife when they give you the new tranny. (:

Well i had it checked out at Global imports here in atlanta. I live about 80 miles from there. They checked out my car and Kevin, the service manager i believe, told me that they will order me a new tranny. They said that it was some thing like a cyncroniser... So by the time i got there it was to late to have the tranny sent by air frieght... So they are going to get it the tranny in on thursday. After they get the tranny, Kevin is going to call me and have MINI roadside come and pick up my car. They are going to give me a rental car to drive while my MCS is being operated on... So that is good news to hear that the warrenty is taking care of this issue.....

i would recommend leaving it at the dealership.

the same thing happened to me, and i broke down, no gears. The tranny just failed.

trust me. DO NOT DRIVE ANYMORE.

I never got any grinding, but I do notice something else in 3rd gear in my S. I push up into 1st, great. I pull down for 2nd, no problem yet. Push up again for 3rd, I feel a vibration through the shifter. If I rest my hand on the **** while in 3rd, I don't feel anything, but if I put a little extra pressure pushing forward/up (you know what I mean) I can feel increased vibration directly related to increased pressure. This may or may not be related. This is one concern that is keeping me from getting a short shifter. If early minis already had problems with the shift cables, you are having a problem with the tranny, I don't want to risk loosing the nice warranty service you are receiving by adding a $60 part. For now I will just do what the doctor told me when I told him "it hurts when I do this."

I have a 2002 MCS... they guys at the dealer ship told me that it wouldnt hurt me to drive it. But i dont plan on driving it much. Mini service is coming to pick my car up on a roll back truck. But all this grinding started this morning. i dont know what i could have done to it. but they are going to replace the whole thing.. which is great....
