My Mini seems to have a bad case of wind or something! if i rev the engine too much (i.e. last night trying to get it up on a ramp) it hums of eggs!! its only done 1400 miles...is it because the negine hasnt been broken in yet??? Seem to remember being told something about not taking it over so many revs before 2k miles.

Egg smell = sulphur. Smelling sulphur (or actually, sulphur dioxide) is a sign of something amiss with your catalytic converter. If this is something that happens more than very occasionally, you'll want to get it checked out. Do make sure that you're always buying gas from the same, reputable, location. Contaminated fuel can damage the converter of any car.

I had a Volvo that used to do this and eventually we brought it in. It never happened more than every once in a while...but was usually credited to bad gas. If I'd kept the car (it was a lemon for a whole lot of reasons), I'd eventually have had to had the converter replaced.

 

its only happened twice...once when i was being a prat and pulling off in different gears (i know i know...stupid!) and last night when i was trying to get the front wheels on a ramp but kept crapping myself about going over the edge of the ramp so rolling back down....reving the engine...and starting all over again...when i eventually got up the top it stunk!!
Shall i just keep an eye on it for the time being and see how it goes??

btw...do you know if its true about staying below a certain amount of revs before the first 2000 miles???

MINI recommends under 4500 RPMs for 1200 miles.

It sounds like you were burning your clutch. Especially trying to get up that ramp. What you're describing sounds like burnt clutch smell. Ease up on it a bit or it won't last very long!

 

Yeah, now that you added the info about the ramps, I think it may be the clutch. As greatgro says, ease up on the clutch and see if smells again. If not, then you're all set. Also, what he said about the rpm during break-in. If you have questions about that, read the manual and/or call your dealer.

Why were you trying to get the front wheels on a ramp? It's a bit early for an oil change...

 

oh ok cool cheers. so now i can let loose and beat my seriosuly anoying friend who always tries to race me...granted he has been winning because i wont push my car too much...but he drives an "E" reg Citreon AX 1.4..so its getting embarrassing!
He will get a shock tonight!!!

Where do you live? Obviously not the US if your friend has a Citroen... So, you're saying that you can race one of those if you keep the revs under 4500?

 

nope! his heap of cr*p seems to have a much faster acceleration...mainly due to the fact that he red lines it every time he changes gear..not like he can damage his car much moer anyway..its a rusty bag of nails!!
