MINI hesitation problems
I took my MINI out yesterday for the first time in about a week and the wierdest thing happened. I could not get the car to accelerate. I could floor the accelerator and nothing would happen. I continued to drive the car for about 4 miles and it started to respond. After driving about 20 miles on the interstate, it seem to start functioning properly. I have a September 2002 built MINI cooper with CVT trans, which has had it's recall taken care of. Has anyone had the same experience? I was almost tempted to have the road service pick it up. Is there a problem with the computer? Thanks for any help.
>>I have a October 2003 built MINI cooper with CVS trans
I assume you mean October 2002, and CVT.
I hope CVS didn't manufacture any of my MINI's parts!
I would definitely have the dealer look at it. Something is not right.

Hi Mini Division! Nice to see ya. Have you been following the threads reference "Stumble" on this forum and also on the Performance Modifications forum? If not, please set aside one hour and trawl through them. There are a lot of upset Mini owners out here.
Thanks,
Ken

Nice job efcmini! You know it;s interesting that they don't acknowledge this stumble problem. Ken, how can we get their attention? Actually I do think we have it but we don't have answers! Why won't they tell us what they are doing to fix this nightmare? I hope they are listening, but we don't have any answers yet!

actually, from my dealer:
unfortunately reprogramming your vehicle will not help.I am expecting a new
software up grade with in the next week.I will put you on my list of people
that I need to contact as soon as it arrives.Sorry for this inconvenience.
I brought it in for a software upgrade and the stumbing started, hence the reference to the reprograming.
I really need this sucker fixed...

Alright Graham, how are ya?
The post after yours (from Jenny I think) got me thinking pretty hard. Her dealer says that re-programming her mini will not help and that they expect a new software upgrade within the next week. As I mentioned on another thread (how many are there now?), I have an appointment this coming Tuesday to get mine re-programmed in order to get rid of the stumble (HA!). So what is the point of me going in for it if the "fix" isn't out for another week?! These dealerships are a joke.
Graham, while I've got your ear...Why have the other threads dried up? Nothing for ages on either the Performance Mod thread or Under the Bonnet. Is this a conspiracy and all complaints are being screened and blocked? I'll hit "submit" now and see if this gets through.

As a moderator on the Off-Topic and Southern California forums, I must say that I am bothered by the implications of your comment above! MCO is not "screening or blocking" complaints or comments from members at all! Please go through the multitude of threads and you will see that there are PLENTY of people complaining about perceived problems. In fact, from my experience here, it takes an awful lot to have a thread locked or deleted. I hope you were kidding!
Cheers!

Clover,
I hope you were kidding when you mentioned us mini drivers complaining about "perceived" problems.
In the context of hesitation, hiccups and yoyos our problems are very real. So much so that many owners are choosing to use the lemon law to get their money back.
It's a real shame BMW/Mini can't fix it - after a year of production I really don't have much faith in the manufacturer being able to get it right.

I think some people have gotten bored with writing about it as it doesn't seem to do any good. Like I said, again, somewhere in this multitude of threads, MINI has not posted anything real that we can look forward to. There was this one post by greatgro on his creaking noise and MINI jumped in after only a few posts. Of course it was their usual "call your dealer response."
ALL i WANT IS FOR THEM TO TELL US WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, WHAT THEY ARE DOING ABOUT IT, AND WHEN WE CAN EXPECT A FIX. That's really not too much to ask is it? We've got a whole bunch of members in our Dallas/Austin/San Antonio/Houston club that are trying to autocross this car and this ******* stumble loses them time. It must have the Porsches and even the BMW drivers laughing at our inability to launch the car. :???:

I just wonder if the person posting as Minidivision is really from Mini, or just someone getting a kick out of posting boilerplate whenever this topic is brought up to stir things up a bit. It would be interesting to wait and see if they actually proactively call.

IF ANYONE GETS A CALL FROM MINI DIVISION ON THIS STUMBLE PROBLEM WOULD YOU PLEASE LET US ALL KNOW! PROBABLY YOU SHOULD POST IT IN ALL CAPS AS A NEW THREAD SO WE DON'T MISS IT IN ALL THE CLUTTER. After all, it now takes me hours to search all the threads to see if we have any new traction on this issue.

MINIDivision is not a prankster. I posted a message about the stumble and other issues of information flow from MINIUSA, and I received a message from MINIDivision saying that someone would contact me. Shortly thereafter, MINIUSA called.
I asked for the same info we all want to know. What is causing this? Is it software-only or is it also a mechanical design-issue? When will it be available? Share what you know. I went as far as to suggest a MINI users group liason that could be informed of DETAILS about existing problems, so that the liason could communicate with the user group.
What did I get from the conversation?
I was told the stumble was due to software and was related to gas formula changes, not to design flaws. I was told that the VP of Engineering was involved and it was a priority with MINI. No ETA on the stumble fix. I asked the rep to give me a guestimate, and he said 30-45 days. That was about a week ago.
I specifically stated that the biggest source of frustration for those of us on the forums is the lack of concrete information and pleaded with MINIUSA to do a better job of keeping us informed.
So far, they have failed to address any of the information-flow concerns.
See ya,
JS

Why do I do things that I know are a complete waste of my good time? This morning at 6:30 am PST I dropped off my Cooper S at the dealer. They are going to fix my stumble by noon today.
As I say, why do I bother? Okay, so I woke up way early this morning, didn't have to be at the office until 7:30 and had an hour to kill. A free shuttle ride from the dealer and a ride back from a friend at lunch time isn't too much hassle is it? (I don't mean to rub it in the face of those of you who have 3 hour drives to your dealerships, but mine is less than 5 minutes...)
I "know" it won't be fixed but I just want to hear the song and dance they're going to give me. Incidentally, the service writer acted like he'd never before heard of the problems I was describing, and I purposely avoided using the key word beginning with 's'. Guess what? He came up with it all on his own, when out of the blue he says, "Is it like a stumble?". "Wow!", says I, "yeah, exactly like that, a stumble!". He looked so proud that he'd made up the perfect word to describe our little problem. I must look either really stupid or very gullible at 6:30 in the morning.
I'll get back to you all with the "results" later.

Saturday I took my 1/03 MCS at Crevier (Santa Ana, CA) to have leaking coolant bottle replaced. I asked that the ECU be checked for current software and was told it was current. The service writer (Andrew) said that MINI was working on the "hiccup" problem (his word) and that MINI was using one of their cars?!. I think "hiccup" is good description for what we all experience. I can't believe after 2 years Mini/BMW has not figured out a solution to this and to the thin windshield problem.
First of all, sorry about the delay my "results".
At noon yesterday I went to pick up my Mini. The receipt for the warranty work said, "Road tested. No problems found. Vehicle is operating normally". I blew a gasket (I mean me, not the car) and stormed into the service managers office. I asked him how in God's name a service tech can say there is no problem when I've been driving the car day in and day out and there IS a problem. He had them pull the car into the driveway and he went for a drive with me. Sure enough the stumble was still there, but the manager insisted this was normal for the Mini as it has low torque at lower rpms. Incidentally, when I initially stormed his office he asked what did I expect as the car doesn't have "gobs and gobs of horsepower".
He says that he is not aware of any stumble problem with the car and that to his knowledge Mini are not working on a "fix".
I am really happy in the knowledge that there is NOTHING wrong with my car and that no fix is needed.
Yippee!!!
Stumbling, Stammering, Stupid Ken
ps When somebody else in So Cal finds a dealership who does become aware of the fix for our problem, please contact me. But don't go to Signal Hill Mini looking for the answers.

I've had almost the exact same story laid on me at Keeler's MINI in Latham NY. I have given them 2 weeks to figure it out or I 'll attempt to end it all with the Lemon law.
