That's a great, reasonable fix for the potential fan problem. I will be mooching this mod soon.

Sorry to be lazy (I know you've described your ingenious mod before), but how did you attach that screen? Did you have to drill the holes for the screws? And what kind of screws are those, exactly? Did they come with the screen?

Thanks!

Very neat looking fix. Is that a form of screen they use of computers? Are those 3/16 Pop rivets? Did you have to take anything off the vehicle in order to install the screen? Finally, has your Mini dealer seen your solution to their PS fan screwup? Sorry for so many questions?

Re: Fan Grille

I went to the "nitty gritty" electronics store. You know, the kind that sells resistors and capacitors, etc. I'm sure Frys has a great selection too. They had all kinds of fan grilles, round, cross-hatched, etc but I think the parallel layout is most clog resistant. There was one more row of bars on either side that were bent all funny for screw mounting that I had to cut off. I drilled holes in the bracket and used pop rivets. The square fan and round bracket don't leave many good drilling locations so thorough planning is necessary. Behind the pop rivets are spacer washers to allow the grille to clear the flares in the bracket. The fan is very easy to remove and you could even do it in the parking lot -- just remove the two nuts at the bottom and then unplug the cord.

I was checking the internet and found some round fan screens in various sizes that might fit the Mini PS fan housing. I dont have my Mini with me right now because it's in for service but the 120MM size looks like it might fit very well. There a bit more than $1.50 then the previous writer paid but for those who can't find any this screen might work very well. A pop rivit in each of the four holes provided looks like all you'll need but I would suggest a spacer between the housing and the screen like the previous writer mentioned I believe would be a good idea. The site is https://www.3dcool.com/?module=product&sku=FanGrill

Fans are measured by the length of one side of the square housing
By that system, the MINI fan is around 100mm. From my photo it looks as if you can drill and rivet wherever you like but the diagonally mounted fan housing on the other side actually makes the search for a suitable drilling location pretty tough. I used a 120mm grille as you can see in the photo with 4.7" as the longest dimension but note that the grille is not centered front to rear. A round grille would require a bit of very careful bending of the mounting legs.

>> Got up this morning and noticed that the power steering was gone and smelled of burning rubber. Opened the bonnet and noticed black soot covering the entire engine compartment. The Mini can be driven but I decided to have it towed for safe measure to the dealer which is only five miles away. Anybody else ever have this problem? Had the Mini into the dealer for a burning rubber smell a month or so ago but the dealer found nothing wrong at that time. I'll let you know what the problem is when I find out in case somebody else has the same problem.
