I can't offer much insight...but for what it's worth I have had my S for two months now and I have never had the fan come on after the engine has shut off.
Considering it has been in near 100 for about half the time I have owned it, and having driven it from Sacramento to LA in 100+ heat, I find it odd that your fan comes on.
Of course, who knows, maybe I should be concerned about mine not coming on????

Welcome to MCO, Let'sRoll!
I'm awaiting delivery of a Cooper, but I'd suggest you take your S to the dealership and have the service department check it out for you, most definitely! I've read on the various boards about the MINIs sometimes having an air bubble in the coolant, so your new baby may need to be burped!
Don't want to burn out a new engine!

Yeah could maybe be an air bubble.
They are bad and all cars can get them. Our shop has a special machine that uses vacum pressure at 500,000 kiloPascals to suck the coolant out of cars. It elminates the need to burb a car when adding large amounts of coolant or changing out the coolant.
We found out my friend's 1993 Z/28 had a more then 2 quart air bubble some where in the motor. It had been running realy hot, 240 plus after just a short drive, for a couple weeks after he changed out the water pump. We used the machine to evacuate all his coolant and found that even though the radiator and overflow looked full the car was actually more then 2 quarts low.
Used the same machine to shoot fresh coolant back into the system and the car ran at a normal 190-210 range

OK guys now you're really confusing things...
Are you saying that MY car needs to be burped because the fan does NOT come on after running it....OR are you saying his car needs to be burped because his fan DOES come on after turning it off???
The thing is, my water temp guage has never risen above half....where it always has been since owning the car.
So, please help clarify.
