Brake and DSC Light
Brake and DSC Light
Hi all,
I have 04 MCS that is out of warranty. The brake light on the tack is lit red all the time and the DSC is lit in yellow. From reading here they seem to be related as the DSC will not work with a brake problem. I took it to an import shop and they told me the brake pads and sensors needed to be replaced. After a little research it appeared to me that the brake pad warning light was with the speedometer and probably not my problem. I have checked the brake fluid level and the ebrake seems to fully disengaged. Does this light need to be reset or does anyone have any suggestions as what can cause this?

ABS and DSC can't function without
the wheel speed sensor. Nor can the ASC+T or any of the other TLAs.
The wheel speed sensor is how the car knows one wheel is spinning or locking up. Or flat!

Bump from way back - yes, when I search, I search
Mine started this yesterday (brake and DSC light only) - I had 'educated guess'-ed this, but any way to tell WHICH wheel sensor?
And is there a chance this is "dirty" vs. "bad"? (like the DSC/TPS on and off issue)

You need a scan tool that can read the ABS system. Your standard cheapo ODBII scanner can't do this. So it's either a trip to a dealer or independent mechanic. Chances are it's going to be one of the front wheels. Since it's the same part on both sides, you can just replace one side and see if it goes away. If not, take the part you removed (which you now know is still good) and place it on the other side.
I'm pretty sure you can't just clean them and that they will have to be replaced. I wouldn't even try anyway with such a critical safety component.

A few days after this happened I noticed the brake pedal getting "squishy" (technical term), traced to a rusted / leaking brake line to passenger's side rear wheel.*
Replaced the hard line firewall-to-rear, got it bled and (shazam!) the lights were out and have not returned.
So it may NOT be the wheel speed sensor...
