Cooling Fan issue: can anybody answer why?

I have owned my MINI 07 for about 2 months. I heard the cooling fan kicked in as I parked the car most of time. Today it just stopped working. I drove around the town today, however, I did not hear the fan running at all. What should I do?

Is the car overheating? Is the AC not cooling? They don't run all the time, just when they need to.

It is not overheating yet. It has been very unusual not being running since the temperature in Portland has been higher than nomal.

Today, I made a call to set up an appointment. SA told me to bring in my car NEXT WEEK. HUH? I have a problem on my car right now. It might be too late. After a back-and-forth conversation, I requsted to give me a loaner until it is fixed. I will take it tomorrow.

The interesting part is, "who is in charge?" I paid over $25K on my car. My MINI has only 3500 mileage. Would it not be a dealership responsibility to be more proactive?

I think you're right. For the fan to not come on in hot weather (and no temp guage on the car, only a warning light) is concerning for a new car owner IMO. What's too bad is that we have to deal with MA's (aka salesmen) after the sale. While some of them surely have a service oriented bent (my MA was in the service dept first), some don't. I think they should hand you to the service dept if it isn't an easily handled call, like "I can't get my hood up, or "how do I get all my doors to unlock with the first push". Just my opinion on how I'd want it to go if I had a question like you had.

i had the same problem one day. i just thought it was nothing. then my engine over heat light came on and in red. MINI brought my car in as emergency and took them about 4 days or so to find the problem. the problem was that my fan fuse was busted and they dont know why. so they just replaced the fuse for me. i recomend you check there first.

When I take MINI today, I will ask them to check the fuse first. Thank you for the quick advise. I hope my dealer will not mess around to find out "Fuse problem" like yours.

You should always contact the service department with service issues. They allegedly are trained for that. MA's are trained to sell the cars. In reality, I have serious doubts about how well either of them are trained to do either job.

I dunno. No offense to the OP, but folks have been asking questions and have not been getting any answers. If you treat the service writers the same way, it does make things more difficult.

If the fan comes on when the A/C is running, then the fuse is fine. And the fan may be fine as well. It has only been around 95F here and the fan on Romi runs only when the A/C is on.

Once you get on the road, if the A/C is off, the fan should not be running. There is enough air flow, even at 120F ambient, to keep the engine within operating specs.

Very true, Skuzzy. But, the OP notes that the fan had been running after parking all the time and then, it stopped. I'd say it should be checked out pronto. My fan usually runs for a bit after parking.

mmm...i also want to add on to my recent "fuse" problem. the A/c will still work just the air wont be as strong. i had to turn up the fan speed @ 64 degrees prior to the fix and it still wasnt cold. however after the fix, i had it at the lowest fan level and bumped the temp. to 70 degrees cuz it was freezing at 64 degrees.

after the fix, my fan will run a bit after i park even if i didnt turn the a/c on that day.

Just to clarify, that fan is another issue. When the a/c is on, the engine fan should also be running to provide additional cooling for the radiators. The blower fan you are referring to is a different fan than that discussed in the thread.

Is there just one fan for the radiator and A/C condensor? I haven't looked but many cars have a separate fan for each.

yes theres only one fan for the conderser and radiator. the r50 had 2 speeds to provide better cooling when the a/c was on.

as for the fuse, is fuse #8 on your engine compatment. it's a 30amp fuse that should be replaced with a 40amp fuse. theres a service bulletin for the problem.

do you have a bulletin number for this one? I'd like to ask my dealer to check it next time I'm in.

I got a loaner while my MINI is being checked. It is a "CHEVY TAHOE." No further comments...

The 40 amp fuse problem was noted on mini2.com as well.

I believe that this overheating problem may be more common than I first thought...

Last Friday, my daughter brought her 2007 coupe into the dealer, as the air conditioning was blowing hot air and the temp indicator was on.

Dealer checked the car and told her to come back if the problem occured again.

Sure enough, on Friday evening I get a frantic call from my daughter saying temp light was red and car was running rough. She got home and left a voicemail at the service dept.

Next day, she brought the car in for service, and got a 2007 loaner.

Guess what? on the way home from work Saturday evening, the exact same thing happened to the loaner!

Even though is was very hot/humid in the NYC area this weekend, my 2006 MCS had absolutely no overheating issues.

For now, I would recommend you put that trip through Death Valley off for a while if you are driving a 2007 MINI...LOL

hmmm

Are you refering to the fan that turns on in the engine bay after the car is turned off? I might have the same problem. The first month I've had my car, I could distinctly hear the fan whirling after I parked and turned off the engine. But for the past 3 months, the fan stopped turning on. My AC is fine, car still drives great (never had any sort of service/problem light turn on), and I only have 2800 miles on a car I've had since late April. Is the engine fan supposed turn on immediately everytime I turn off the engine?

I think part of these fan problems is due to the elevated engine temperatures during the break-in period. I know that mine runs a lot cooler now and the fan runs a lot less after the engine is off, sometimes not at all.
