Air Bag light stays on

When I started my car on Tues. morning the air bag warning light came on
and didn't go off. It's still on today. 2006 MCS. Is there a special trick to getting it to reset or is it a trip to the Dealer as the book says. My Dealer is 120 miles away. Thanks for any help.

Once your AB system is tripped, it will not reset itself by itself. Someone with a scan tool that has airbag capability built in is required. I unplugged my airbag wire under the seat when I was doing other things and forgot and turned on the key.... wham... red light. I'm just going to live with the light till I need to go back to the dealer for something.

Most likely, it's the wiring harness for the seat airbags. Replacing the wiring takes a couple of hours at least. It should be covered under warranty. I have yet to find anyone other than the dealership that can reset the light. Lots of people say "anyone with a scan tool can do it", but I haven't seen it actually happen yet. I called all the local independent BMW specialists, and they all said they could not reset the light.

I just had the same problem with mine and was anticipating the worst case (lots of $$$). Dealer ended up replacing the electrical connections under both seats - covered under the 150000 mile airbag warranty. No charge!!!

Thanks for all your input. I'm going to call the Dealer today and make an appt. I e-mailed for an appt. on Wed. but no reply so I suppose they don't really care if I bring my car for service or not. This is the third time with this Dealer and the other two were less than what i expected. I'm about ready to drive to Indy and have the Dealer i bought the car from fix it. At least they would be happy to see me. I guess when you live in the "Boon Docks" this is the price you pay.

Mine is on, I thought it was the harness, so I took it in...I need the entire passenger side airbag replaced! I was quoted at $1200 after parts and labor...don't be too cheery yet, not until your problem is diagnosed atleast.

Put the driver side seatbelt in the passenger belt buckle and vice versa. Sounds crazy, but it worked for me.

Get some wire, spice around the connectors between the seat and the cars harness, then get a scan tool w/ BMW airbag ability and clear the light. they had a design flaw in the connectors, unless you got the redesgined ones when you were in last time this is cheaper and from what I've read the procedure for a 3rd visit for that issue. Plus the code reader with BMW airbag would confirm this really is the problem.

only works if its just weight on the the sensor and only the top not both lights.

I wouldn't be too positive you got a perfect diagnosis either.
Any way to get a 2nd opinion?

Peak makes a tool that reads just Airbags on the BMW system, sorry dont have more info on that, might be on the MiniMania website just make sure it is not their ONDII reader. It's my backup plan if the light ever returns. Hoping it wont come to that point though.

My first post here, still trying to get a Mini here in Anchorage Alaska. Bad news on the reset tool, doesn't work on the airbag light.
My e-mail to Peak:

Dear Mr. S,

Thank you for your interest in Peake Research.
The R5/EMX tool will not reset the airbag light. We do not currently
offer a tool that will reset the airbag light on a Mini.
We ship our tools through USPS or UPS depending on the customer's choice.
Best regards,
Adam

Tom S, I'm sure you've solved it by now, but the autoenginuity enhanced with BMW software and hardware cable will clear the code pretty easily. the yellow (airbag) clip can pop off sometimes if a seat is scootted too quickly or jerkily. the thing costs about $420 from bimmerzone, does alot of other stuff as well. there is supposedly a $30 airbag reset tool on ebay-but thats kinda iffy, as it doesn't really tell you whats going on.
some cars have 4 clips, some three. if the previous owner or shop did swap out an airbag harness, they might'v gotten a wrong part when replacing the harness. or might've just not had a reset tool. you can also just bypass the whole plug thing with little 4ohm resistors from radio shack. there might be someone else in alaska with the tool you could just drive across state and borrow.
either way, the tool will tell you what code is going off-airbag, weight sensor, or seatbelt, any of the 3 can set off the light. You have to tell the car computer to clear the code to make the car safe though. as long as you clear the code, all the airbags should still be safe and functional.

I am new to the website have had my 2003 MCS for about six weeks now but managed to loosen a clip behind the dash setting off my airbag light. after calling both dealers that are 2 and 3 hours away and they were telling me it would be $99 0r $57.50 to hook up and tell me what I already knew before they would touch the system. I decided to order the (B200) scan tool from obdwholesale and it gave me the code of passenger side airbag.... so I reset the light because I had already plugged the airbag in and it did reset the light. I don't know if it will give all the codes but it will help out if you know what the problem is and fix it. because if there is any fault the light will not reset.

Have used the B200 tool found I ordered it from,
http://www.obdtoolstore.com/shop/pro...3dbbd4031beb7f

Was able to read fault code and reset light so it does work, I have attached owners manual for it also. You can also find it on ebay but OBD store was priced about the same and shipping was cheaper from Hong kong to Canada than USA to Canada.

question:

By removing the pass seat and running the car for a time and then reinstalling the seat with all the connections, the air bag light is on (Obviousy since I had the seat out for some time). Now having everything reconnected (the light is still on because it has not been reset) will the passenger seat air bag function? If so I don't care about the light since I will be replacing both seats next spring anyway. Just a safety question.

Thanks
Jim

from what I understand, the air bags will still function if needed in an accident, but, they won't function in the "smart" deploy mode that they are designed for.
probably its a safer idea to get the code reset, then, when you replace the seats in the spring, don't activate any power until after the installation.

I bought the B200 tool- was very happy with it- cheaper than a single trip to the dealer!
