noise??

Ok what do you think it is? I'm taking my mini in for an appointment tomorrow. I have lots of rattles that I cant stand anymore..Hopefully those get fixed. The question I have is this: When the car is at idle (not in gear)...I hear a light knocking sound....I figured it was the cam chain that everone else has been talking about..tensioner or whatever..But today I discovered that the sound goes away when the clutch is depressed. What do you think? Is it a bearing in clutch/flywheel?? Car runs great and have had no problems besides rattles. 2500 miles.

My MCS is one month old today. I have the same issue with the light knocking sound, and it goes away when the clutch pedal is depressed. Also some interior rattles, but besides that the car is great. 1800 miles.

Yeah I don't know?? They have had my car for three days...Trying to fix all of the rattles. They don't understand what i'm talking about as far as the knocking sound goes. They told me that they all sound like that...I told them yes I know they all have the ticking direct injection sound...but a knocking that goes away when the clutch is pressed cant be normal. I guess I can drive it until it breaks . I'll update you guys as I go. The rattles they are trying to fix: above glove box storage, lower center stack, upper head unit, drivers door and boot trunk area..and i'm not trying to be picky here!! these rattles are BAD. Its like cruising around with a bucket of nails next to you:impatient I still love it though and hope things get fixed!!

Please post any corrections that the dealership makes. I also have a rattle in the drivers door. Also, each door makes a different sound when you close it. That just seems strange to me.

Hi OCUmcs, what kind of rattle are you hearing from the front door? Does it seem like coming from the pillars or the window?

I also have the clutch noise. Anyone know what this is and how to fix it? The thing is, I don't have the luxury of bring my mini to the dealership for a fix. I imported the car from the US and I live in the Philippines. No mini dealership here :impatient

Got my car back today. They fixed a couple of the rattles...didnt fix the others. The one really bad one in the boot area kills me...pretty bummed out. The light knocking sound from clutch/flywheel was blown off as normal for R56's...guess I'll put up with it until something happens:impatient.

Thread with an on-going similar discussion.

In the R53, this was NOT considered a normal noise and a TSB was issued to correct it for customers who complained about it.

As far as the un-clutched manual transmission rattle, are you listening to a rattle, knocking, grinding, metal to metal noise, or just a bunch of interconnected gears turning inside the tranny when you release the clutch in neutral. The later is normal, the former is not.

Yes, get ready for a new transmission. As said before the problem with the R53 was finally accepted as a real problem after a couple of years. The problem with the R56 sounds the same. It will take numerous complaints befor BMW chooses to acknowledge it.

the "knocking" noise wasn't normal. I think you were refering to "backlash" in the tranny when you were talking about normal knocking/rattling. the knocking noise we're refering to is just as loud as the direct injection noise.
For me it only went away after the whole tranny was replaced. the dealer replaced the flywheel, clutch, and throw-out bearing before replacing the whole tranny.

I have been able to rid my car of two seperate rattles in the boot area. The first was in the headliner, there is a plate with a clip on it that is glued to the headliner to keep it up. The glue on mine did not hold so I replaced it with some double sided tape and that fixed one rattle.

Also, on the Drivers side wall of the boot there is a small access panel that has a green plastic cable in it that I think is an emergency release for the gas cap. This cable is very loose and tends to flap around against the metal part of the wheel well. I used electrical tape and taped it down and it fixed another rattle.

Unfortunately I have one more to go, but that one was my own fault. I did not secure down my aftermarket XM antenna, but I will soon be running through the factory satellite antenna and that rattle will be a thing of the past.

rattles and knocking

I had my car back to the dealer several times for rattles...enough to have them tell me they have done everything they could for me. I am still not very happy... but I can live with it. The knocking sound is there and was dismissed as backlash. I know its not normal but at least it has been documented and they know its there. Xray and I go to the same dealership....but they have never heard it in any other cars? I went from proud owner of a Mini S to hoping it gets me home from work.

I have 06 Cooper Hatch which had the rattle at 300 miles. Dealer changed out clutch - did not fix the problem. Dealer changed the trans which took about 80% of the rattle away. The other 20% is the clutch operating levers and throw out bearing which I bet they tell me is normal when I go for 1st service next month.

I have a bigger problem. Banchee howling sounds from engine bay when stepping on the gas through the gears. In top gear (5th) the noisesettles down to a deep growling sound which is in harmony with th engine RPM's.
High revs = high noise level (Banchee sound) Low lrevs + growling.

If I switch the auto AC OFF all noises go away aand the cooper sounds like a kitten purring - very nice but hot as hell in the cabin.

any comments on this latter niose issue?

Thanks

sounds like it could be a bad bearing on your Alternator or AC pump pulleys

HI there, our '07 MCS has almost 6,000 miles now-and the noises are starting to drive me crazy. two main complaints: the dirvers window makes a noise that I think might be from the window oushing into the seal or wsomething. Its annoying as he$% because it happens on every bump at any speed. The other noise seems to come from the center of the dash by the vent.. a tinny metal like rattle. Thought it was my radar detector that doesn't sit very evenly on the window (escort passport) but i tunmounted it and the noise remained.

I've also notice a cooulpe occasions when the car was cold that it rattled/knocked like it was about to throw a rod. The noise went away but still sneeks in occasionally. Checked the oil, and always run 93+ octane. THe car also makes some weird noises when it is first shut off, a humming type electrical noise-not the cooling fan either kind of odd. Then theres the triple clunk that I hear every time I shut it down, seems normla some kind of switch/relay

I have the same problem! My mini has made knocking sounds on 3 separate occasions. I wasnt sure where it was coming from at first. It kinda sounded like someone or something was tapping on the car near the rear (from the bottom of course). I called the dealership and they had no idea what I was talking about.

Is there a place to read your cars specific TSB? Does Mini USA make these available?
