July 8th | San Diego BMWCCA Auto-X | Qualcomm

LOCATION: Qualcomm West Lot (San Diego)
TIMES: gates open at 6:30, registration closes at 8:30.
FIRST COME FIRST SERVED. 80 car limit

The one day SD BMWCCA events have a history of filling up early. Plan on arriving before the 7 AM registration formally opens to get a number at the gate.

You must be a BMWCCA member ($40 and totally worth it for the Roundel magazine and the chapter newsletters)

Cost for one day is $45

CLASSING: the San Diego chapter has one MINI COOPER class, so all the MINIs are thrown into the mix against each other (supercharger or not).

NOTE: Qualcomm has a very large parking lot that the BMWCCA uses, which means the courses are LONG. The last one I was had had finish times in the 100 to 120 second range.

Format is 4 runs in the first practice session, 4 runs in the second practice session, and 3 offically timed runs.

Interest List
  • Dave
  • Rory
  • Matt
  • Charlie
  • Jerry & Teresa (co-driving)
  • Joe
  • HPzie
  • Jimmy
  • Paul
Prize List

1st MC
  • Cone Star shirt (donated by Rory)
  • 6-pack of beer (donated by Dave - if it's Dave, it goes to 2nd)
1st MCS
  • Cone Star shirt (donated by Rory - if it's Rory it goes to 2nd)
  • 6-pack of beer (donated by Dave)
Fastest 1st time autocrossing MINI driver
  • 6-pack of beer (donated by Dave)

July 8th, San Diego BMWCCA Autocross

Just thought I'd start a thread for the July 8th autocross put on by the Sand Diego chapter of the BMWCCA at Qual Comm.

$45 to enter. Includes coffee and muffins in the morning, sub chips and soda for lunch, fast long track that let's you air it out a little (third gear at times) and normally the timing is working during the practice runs so you can see how you're doing.

Great bunch of people (as all bmwcca chapters are in my experiance).

Go to sdbmwcca.com for all the info.

Worth the drive people.

Bring the wifie (hubby). Spend Sat night and hand the next day in SD.

Oh yea,

Dave, you want to be the keeper of the list here?

I'll start the prize list.

1st MC = Cone Star shirt
1st MCS = Cone Star shirt (if it's me it goes to 2nd)

Both XL

All Mini's run together in the Mini class. We can do our own prize deal. Their trophy will go to the fastest Mini.

I'm there

You stand a chance to get some good experience and wear down your runflats so you can get some stickier tires.

I will second what Dave said. You will gain experience and will have more fun than you have ever thought possible. If not for prior commitments I would be there.

I use Goodyear 23/8 X 15 slicks for autocross. 215/40 - 17 for street.

For autocross, less tread and softer the compound the better. That's why they sell shaved tires and slicks for autoocross.

Hey Rory, edumacate me. What is 23/8? And where do I get them? And is that on 6.5 or 7.0 wide?

I just might see you there after all. Looks like me and the wife might share a car, but she is starting to cave in.

They are a racing slick by Goodyear. 23" OD, 8" wide surface area and they fit a 15" rim.

They require a 1/2 spacer, longer studs and nuts to go with the studs. I have them on 15" X 7" - 38 offset wheels.

I'm not sure where you can get them (they sent them to me) but I'll find out what what model they are so you can do some checking.

Cool, thanks for the answer. Don't worry about checking the model, I don't think I am ready to get that serious yet.

Rory,
15's won't fit on a MCS, will they?

Joe: the MCS has the exact same brakes as the MC. 15's will definitely fit on an MCS. They are no different.

TCE performance even makes a 11.75" Wilwood BBK specifically for 15" wheels

Awesome...now, which wheels to buy?
I was looking at the 15" Kosei K1 Racing wheels on TireRack. They are on closeout now, so I don't know how long they will have them?

One quick word on classing and 15's:

If you plan on racing with an MCS in an SCCA stock class (g-stock), you can't use 15" wheels. You can only use 16x6.5 and 17x7 with a stock offset.

The MC can only run 15's and 16's in H-stock for a similar reason (that's the way they came from the factory)

If you're not concerned about SCCA then go right ahead and get the 15's.

Dave, looks like I talked T into going to the SD event. Only bringing one car though and at this time I am leaning towards bringing Angelina due to the longer track. I just think she is better suited for it. So it will be up to you to replresent Team Justacooper.

I highly reccomend the Kosei wheels. They're very light and have the correct offset (38) to fit 225 45 15 tires under the car even with H-sport springs.

Just my opinion, but you don't need any more brakes than what came stock on the car for autocross. Track maybe, but not autocross. I've been running stock with greenstuff pads forever.

Four days to go. Weather is supposed to be around 83. Way cooler than the 105's I've been dealing with for a week now.

I would like to go to this...

But I haven't gotten my package/number from BMWCCA.
Would it still be ok to run?

Just registered just two days ago.

If you got a confirmation e-mail when you registered online, print that out. It needs to show your member number and your name on it from BMWCCA.

Otherwise, contact bmwcca 864 250-0022 and tell them you have an event coming up this weekend and would like them to e-mail you a confirmation of your membership number.

You will need to have your membership number on something that BMWCCA sent you, not just the number hand written on a post-it note. Printing the e-mail or confirmation will work. I did just that for the April california speedway event.

Cool in that case I'm in

Will call them tomorrow to get everything all set. If not I'll just go for the drive and see how people do at the track.
