I'm sure by the age of eight or nine most children know more offensive words than we do. Even if they never hear a bad word at home they'll get plenty of input from school. I remember going on a field trip with my sons third grade class. Talk about WTF! Thats mild compared to what these kids were saying.

I've coached roller hockey for almost six years now with kids ranging from 5 years old to 14. You wouldn't believe what you hear out there during the games . You tell them to stop, watch thier language, but it doesn't stop for long. Its not all the kids, just a one or two on each team, but the entire team is exposed. There is no way to keep kids from seeing/ hearing offensive things, just be prepared to explain it when they ask.

I've shown my kids some things (not all is approperate) on the WTF thread, (they are 12 and 9) and they get a good laugh like any of us. My son even asked what WTF stood for. So I told him What The F..four letter word, that if I catch you saying your in trouble. He knows what it is, he's heard it before. I may have even slipped once. But he also know its not approperate for him to be talking like that. I'm sure the day he WTF dad, I will get a good laugh.

Be careful what you filter, and tell this age children. They still believe that parents dont lie. I remember this one kid in my sons school, he would get mad a someone and stick his pinky finger up at them. So I asked him what he was doing. He said "my mom told me this is worse than the middle fingure"

By the way, I can't WTF!!

(wait till friday......where the heck was your mind )

One of my favorite scenes in the "Christmas Story" movie is when Ralphie uses the "F" word. When asked where he would have heard that word he instinctively rats out the name of one of his friends although he has heard it from his father countless times. So his mom calls the friend's mom and tells how Ralphie used that word and then asks the other Mom where she thinks Ralphie heard that word. You can hear the other mm say "his father?"

You can't filter but so much from kids nowadays. I know i'm not that old, but it seems things have changed a bit from when i was that age. Or maybe i just had a very sheltered life. I can understand filtering on this site, but what would an 8 year old want to do on a car forum? Look at pictures?

If only you knew what your kid talked about in school.

I think you might qualify for "Compulsive Communicator" status or perhaps "Overdrive"

That is hilarious! First it's funny 'cuz the concept of flipping a finger is still there in it's complete form, as if changing the finger used diminishes the act. That's a riot!

Second, funny 'cuz the kid is going to go into middle school and stick his pinky out at someone. He'll get beat up for sure. :impatient Unless it's a high brow dinner party on the lanai.

Its not about my eight year old - that was an analogy ( I suppose I should have labeled it as an analogy).

It is about appropriateness

If WTF is part of the vernacular for your circle - fine

This forum is a bigger global circle

If you get some thrill from uttering our writing such - fine
But why subject others?

People form impressions from what you write - If thats your style - Fine

I only question the wisdom of your decision to post such in a public forum.

My opinion

There's a very fun and long tradition of ribald and naughty language in the English-speaking world, samiam. If you don't understand or enjoy the humor, it's hard to explain. I'd suggest anyone not enjoying the silly acronyms move along to other threads and realize that lots of us think they are funny.

edit: and BTW, it was 15,000th post, not 1500.

Closing thread per author's request. Thanks for everyone's comments.
