Members Not Able to Log-On to NAM

Mark and Dave,

I have instant messaged with several members of NAM this weekend and they have not been able to log onto NAM or even to view it on their monitors.

Ryephile says nobody in Michigan has been able to get on this weekend and Greatbear in Maryland has been trying to log on since Friday night.

Just wanted to see if anyone else had heard of these issues.

Yes...I've heard of several people not being able to access the site. As far as I can tell it is a DNS problem where the domain is failing to be resolved by various ISPs. Given this I've issued an update on our DNS zone file that should force the domain to propogate again. Hopefully this will resolve the issue. If anyone can provide a list of the ISPs people are using that can not access the site that would be very helpful.

I've had a hard time the last couple of days to log-on, but I do get on after many time-outs. I also find moving around on the site slow.

Where do I look for my IPS?

Opening a command prompt and typing "ipconfig /flushdns" while all IE windows are closed will purge the DNS resolver cache on your machine. This is the usual first step when there are DNS name resolution problems.

I could not get on to NAM (even directly by IP address) from home 8/20 or 8/21. I even tried Firefox. I have never had an issue at home before.

Came to work this morning and had no issue.

I'm at work and able to get to NAM, but at home it's a different story. I have Comcast there and I suspect it's an issue with DNS, since everything else works just fine. Three different computers, three different browsers, all the same result, which is about 20 seconds of 'connecting to...' before the timeout. It's as though the DNS at Comcast is pointing to something that is not there.

When I get back home I will try to change my settings to point to another DNS server and see if that helps.

Can you tell me what ISP you are using?

I'm trying to figure out how many ISPs this is effecting as nothing on this side has been changed relative to DNS for many months.

Thanks for the help!

I've been up all weekend here in the in Panhandle, at the house and work today. My ISP is ***.net for the Gulf Coast. It's also cable if that helps or makes a difference.

Many times knowing what does work helps with figuring out what doesn't work and why.

When calling be sure to tell them that our site is up but some users can not reach it. They will likely have you do a test to see what IP address that www.northamericanmotoring.com is resolving to (if at all). If it isn't resolving at all or to something other than 69.93.166.248 then it means there is a DNS problem on their end. I republished the DNS information from the site yesterday afternoon and it takes up to 72 hours to propogate around the net. Before calling their support number be sure to give it a try to see if the propogation has reached their DNS servers.

Also, once you have contacted them drop me an email via the Contact Us form and let me know what you found.

Thanks for your assistance!

I've been seeing the same thing from home since last Saturday. At first I thought you folks had brought the site down for repairs. When I got to work Monday I was able to access, but still cannot from home as of Tuesday morning.

My home access is through SBC DSL in the Chicago area. And another weird twist is, if I use the dial-up access provided by SBC for out of town use I can see the site. I've tried this from work but not at home.

DNS at home is resolving ok. When I ping www.northamericanmotoring.com I see it resolve to 69.93.166.248, but the ping response times out. I have reset my router, tried alternate DNS servers, etc. I deleted my NAM cookies, and cleared temp web files. No good. None of my other favorite sites seem to be affected by this.

I'll be really curious to see the resolution on this one, and I hope it's soon. I try not to access from work if I can, so I've been going through withdrawals....

Everyone,
The hosting provider found a potential routing problem that was preventing certain IP blocks from accessing the site. They have made a change to correct this so please let me know if you continue to have problems accessing the site. Of those that contacted me it appears that Adelphia, Road Runner (rr.com), Comcast, and Yahoo/SBC DSL customers were most likely to have the problem.

To all those that assisted in providing me with IP and tracert information...a HUGE thank you as it was the information that helped the hosting provider determine where the problem was...and hopefully resolve it.

I'm in Michigan, have charter.net and did not have any issues, same at work at umich.edu (merit).

I know the issue was resolved, just wanted to add to the knowledge, etc...

See Post #20 above, AC, for Mark Ferguson's detailed explanation.

Good that you were able to identify the issue. I have also been having intermittent problems reaching the site since about Saturday and I am on Roger's Yahoo broadband (cable). I also work for Roger's Cable and reaching NAM has proven intermittent even from the office (though I could at least reach it, unlike at home) as late as this morning. I'll monitor it from here and home and see if it has improved.

AC_MINI - if you still can not connect at home please run the following tests and email the results to us using the Contact Us form from your work computer (you'll have to forward them to your work email first).

Using a browser go to: www.whatismyip.com (email the IP address it reports)

Using Windows go to: Start->Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt
Enter tracert www.northamericanmotoring.com

Email us the results from the above command. Note: you will have to choose Edit->Select All and then Copy to be able to copy and paste the results from the command.

Thanks!

Mark
