DIY spot

I have seen some one compiling diy threads under each category. Could we maybe make one section where all diy stuff goes?? The searches might be easer.

I like that idea and with the amount of information people have/done things I think that would be a slick thread.. +1 for DIY

We do, you just don't give us enough time to respond sometimes.

Custom avatars are something that Mark has been considering as part of a group of things at a later date.

A central DIY area is a good idea though - we'll discuss it.

A DIY area would still need to be divided up between coupes and cabs, R53, R56, etc.

I know I don't want to have to weed through a lot of irrelevant stuff about other models.

I think with the expansive signatures that are allowed, custom avatars aren't really necessary but that's just me.

That wouldn't be difficult to do. I'm thinking just another sub category under modifications.

Some of us hide signatures because the majority of them are obnoxious and make reading threads difficult, especially when someone post 5 times in a thread and do not have the courtesy to take it out of some of the posts. Avatars would be ok since they won't be incredibly obtrusive, and you can still hide those I think.

I say we make our own.. then if there is enough threads, Mark will have no choice but to make a spot for it, the WTB thread for example..

Mark, resistance is futile!! HAHA

As a person who has contributed a few DIY's, I had a discussion with Mark on this a couple years ago. Although we weren't talking about something as simple as a separate thread/forum--there are a number of issues to be addressed.

One of the things that bugs me the most is looking at a DIY that's a few years old and missing ALL or some of the pictures because the host has changed or they used a free image hosting service.

Also it would be great to have some consistency in how the DIY's are entered. For instance, in order for them to be categorized, the need to use the same Category, and spell it the same way, or have a Pull Down menu that inserts the proper category. Without it, someone might label a DIY for a 2007 MCS vs. using R56 vs. 2007 MC, etc... With it, requires some coding, and with Mark working on the Dragon, and other higher priority issues right now, it's not going to go very far unless we as a group, can
define/invent the optimal system that will serve the community.

Richard

What NAM needs is an "index" page to reference topics. Look at this awesome page on a BMW site: http://www.e38.org/. It would take a lot of work to compile a NAM version, but it can be built up gradually. It could become truly a central place to look up things first, and would increase the usefulness and popularity of NAM.

It could help cut down on the never ending new threads that have questions about topics that have been discussed before. Frequently people reply with "do a search", but the fact is that it is often very difficult to find what you want through the search facility.
