Sooo, new owner of a used 2012 Mini Cooper Countryman S All4...Mini says there is supposed to be a pop (I don't know the technical term) sound from the exhaust while in sport mode but I haven't been able to get it to do it...Its an automatic transmission (is that why?)...
It seems kind of a silly complaint but I absolutely love that sound when I hear it lol...
I got a bunch of plans for the car (lift, tires, lights, suspension) and I will probably be posting frequently with questions...but this is the first thing thats eating at me...
When the RPMs are high in sport, you ought to be able to produce them. Bring the RPMs up in a low gear and let off the gas and see if the pops and burbles are there. We also have a 2012 and can definitely hear them (though they are a bit quiet.)
helps when everything is nice an warm..from spirited driving.. have to start putting your foot deeper into it to get that snail to spin up a bit more!!
Yeah on our '13 I have to basically be warmed up, in sport mode, and being an auto it has to do an aggressive downshift Usually while coming to a red light). I only really hear it with the windows down too.
If you have a stick you need to do a more aggressive downshift and youll hear it.
Big bummer for me was it was not in the tune JCW tune package so no pop and burble for Lucy.
Did you also get the JCW exhaust with bluetooth controller? I have a 2016 MCS and had the JCW exhaust and tune done before taking delivery. The car is very quiet with the right exhaust flap closed. Tap the bluetooth controller** twice and it opens the flap and pops and burbles like crazy...with a nice gutteral acceleration sound.
** Got tired of having to double tap remote controller to open flap, so disconnected the blue tooth connector and now the burbles and pops are full time.

The sport "tune" from Mini is designed that after the engine and fluids are completely warm then the "pop pops" will begin to happen. With a factory exhaust they are very muted, and with an automatic transmission they will be a little more difficult to reproduce since the vehicle is controlling the downshifts and the throttling for you more than you would be able to in a manual. I have a 14 MCS with a manual transmission and I have installed a full Magnaflow exhaust with a res delete and my "pop pops" now sound like shotguns. I absolutely love it and it makes me giggle every time it does it.
It seems the resonator delete delivers the most difference. Our '12 has a free flow dp and a 2nd cat back magnaflow. The pops and burbles in sport are constant, but still fairly quiet.
The magnaflow though is such a sweet sounding exhaust.
I have a 2013 R60 ALL4 S with a manual tranny and I had virtually no pops or burbles... In fact, the exhaust sound across the board was pretty unremarkable from the driving position even with the sport button on, the windows down, and the stereo off. If I started the car in the garage and stood behind it, it obviously sounded better, but I still didn't have the pops or burbles.
Then I had the JCW exhaust put on at the dealership and I finally got the pops and burbles. The exhaust note is only slightly more noticeable from the driving position, but not much... I wish it was about 25-30% louder.
I live in Colorado at a higher altitude, so the pops and burbles are much less frequent unless I'm really trying to get on it... When I drive home to visit the folks at a lower altitude, the pops and burbles are almost constant.

If you don’t mind how much did the JCW exhaust take you back? I have a 2015 JCW and it doesn’t come with a JCW exhaust as standard equipment....enjoy!

I got a deal on it from Sewell Mini back when they used to sell OEM parts online. I had a discount code and got the entire setup for 700.00 including shipping.

The dealership put it on for me for 75.00.
How was it only 75 bucks to install? is that a typo?? lol I feel like the mini dealership will charge me that much just to replace fog light bulbs...
This looks almost identical to the JCW exhaust system I got except that it came with the long exhaust pipe which doesn't have the resonator attached.
I think it's actually just the deletion of the resonator that actually causes the throatier exhaust and the pop and burble...
Truth be told, you could prolly just get under the car, cut the resonator out with a chain cutter - add in some regular exhaust pipe in its place - and get the sound your looking for... The muffler seems exactly the same and the exhaust tips are just for show only...

I did sweet talk them a little to get the price down... This is the 4th car I 've bought from that dealer in the last 10 years, so they work with me a little.
It's actually a really quick and easy install if you already have the tools needed. I would've done it myself, but my garage is a single car and VERY small... I can't even open the door all the way getting in and out when the car is in the garage. Plus, I didn't many of the tools needed and I figured by the time I went out and bought a good jack, 4 good jack stands, a good chain cutter, it would be about the same price for the dealer to do it.
The whole install took all of maybe 15 minutes... literally.
