Can you upload MP3s to an onboard hard drive and access it as a media source?

As long as you have Connected XL. It's not on the standard system.

I just got my car today and it DOES have Connected XL, however, I can't find anything on Connected XL in the Owner's Manual. Is there a place online for directions on how to use it?

Thanks for your time!

The manual for the Connected XL is PART of Connected XL. Which isn't the most useful thing at all times, that I know of, there is no copy of its manual anywhere else. You have to browse through it right on the screen, I believe the manual is under Vehicle Info.

To get MP3s over to the Hard Drive, go to Media, then External Devices, plug in a USB stick with the MP3s on them, select that, and there should be an option of transfer/copy media. (Relaying this from memory) Also, there's 20GB of space on the internal HDD.

20 GB is such an odd number. It must be space it uses for it's own purposes, and then 20 GB (likely more) was left over / free, and then some engineer said "let's let the user have access to this space"...

Copying music into the car’s library from iTunes is really, really easy. Go into iTunes on your computer, and select all of the songs that you want to copy. Usually making a playlist with them is the easiest thing to do, because you have a consolidated list of tracks to copy. Once you have your list selected, open up a new window for your flash drive in Windows Explorer/Finder, and then simply drag and drop the selected songs from iTunes into the drive. You’re all done with the computer. Once you’re in your car, go to Media>External Devices>USB, and the car will begin to play music. Grab the menu from the left hand side, and scroll down until you get to the icon that resembles a floppy disk.

Click on it, and the car will automatically copy the contents of your flash drive to its hard drive. At any point after it has copied, you can remove the flash drive. To manage the music stored in the car, go to Media>Multimedia Collection, swipe the controller to the right for the options menu, and choose “Manage Music Collection”. You can then add or delete songs, check available storage, copy songs to another USB drive, etc.

This manual is for the MINI Connected App itself, 1 option on the Conencted XL wheel, and is rather outdated (shows the old Y cable, talks about Send to Car which was removed a few months back). Its not specific to the new F56 system which changed things up a bit.

It'll still have some worthwhile info, but keep in mind its only for having your phone connected to and using that portion of the system, and that its an old manual.

From my understanding... no. You have to go the "PC/Mac iTunes -> thumbdrive -> F56" route.

No. You can't even copy songs from an iPod to a computer without 3rd party software. It's meant to be a one way street for obvious reasons.
