Stained boot from windshield wiper...
So I have read many posts about the rear windshield wiper leaking and staining the boot and rear emblem.
I myself had this problema and at first thought it was cosmoline. Well, its not cosmoline.
I took my car to dealer and told them what was happening and they replaced the bushing and suposedly fixed the issue. Well, they didn't. I took it back and spoek with the foreman and told him and showed him what the issue was.
He called Mini and found out how to perma fix this problem. It WAS the rear windshield wiper jet leaking and staining the rear. What Mini told him to do is create a return hose back into the washer reservoir. So they did this and the problem has been solved.
So for all of you with stained boots, take it to the dealer and have them do this.

Somehow I don't think the dealer would take kindly to me telling them to route a return hose along the entire underside of the car.

I read about this on the offical mini website before I bought my mini--you might check there for any reference number or other solutions. I did buy a PW even knowing this (its what I wanted!) but only about a month ago so no problems yet. I did buy the expensive paint warranty so if it happened they would have to fix the paint itself.
Rick, read the first post... Did they create the return hose as the OP suggested? I'd certainly try that if the replacement did not do the trick. Somtimes, in my experience, the service writers at BMW/Mini will be a bit dismissive of things that people "find on the internet" but keep asking and eventually you should find someone that can reference the official service bulletin for this.
Good luck!

Normal water can scale up in the pumps - don't use tap water. Distlled water might work, but it will freeze if you live someplace cold, and that WILL split the lines and FUBAR thew pump. Bottom line - don't use water inside any of your mechanical parts. If you're worried about leaks, investigate the return line thing above - I don't know the specifics and I can't find the service bulletin online, but I under the basic fundamentals of hydrodynamics - the fluid will try to find the lowest point, then leak for there if it's gonna leak. A return line should solve this (just thinking logically), I'd imagine.
No I haven't tried the return line...
I also left the tank empty for three months...but the dealer filled it up when they replaced the rear wiper.
This stops the leak but the low washer warning light is on.
I will ask the dealer to run the return line.

I've got the stain too. I haven't found anything to get rid of it yet. What about instead of going all the way back to the reservoir, just adding a hose that drained somewhere along the bottom of the Mini. Away from the paint!
The only thing I'd wortry about with that kind of setup would be that it would start to syphon the resevior all over the street, leaving it dry when you go to use it. A flow line back to the tank would remove the possibility of that happening. But, I think you have the right idea - I'd just be sure to check it carefully over the first few days you have it installed to make sure it's not slowly draining the tank over the street.
I have the paint stain on my PW. It happened the first day I got the car.
