Looking for street/autocross brake pads

I am looking for a street/autocross brake pad for an 02 MC. At Nationals, the stock pads just didn't cut it for me. I've heard hawk hps are good? anyone have any other recommendations?? The car is daily driven and run in the H-Stock class.

I've run the Porterfield R4S on my M Roadster and liked them.

The HPS pads are fine for daily driving and some auto-x. If you get alot of heat in them, they will start to fade pretty bad.

HPS's are more streetable than the others though. If the car won't see the track, HPS is a great choice IMO.

Porterfield R4S, great for auto-x and low dust. Have been running them for 6-8 months . Have multiple auto-x on them and one track day, great pads for street/auto-x.

Porterfield R4, more grip, takes longer to warm up, more dust. More of a track pad.

I've tried both Porterfield R4S and Hawk HPS on my Cooper, and prefer the Hawks. The Hawks are cheaper. The Hawks stay "good" until they get really hot, then they dissappear fast. The Porterfields lose their braking ability more gradually, but it starts sooner. I prefer the Hawks mainly for that reason. Other people may be more comfortable with the gradual decline in brake power.

Of course, I used different rotors for the two pads (cryo treated plain rotors for the Hawks, and the Texas Speedwerks rotors with the Porterfields). I don't know to what extent the rotors affect the brake performance.

I tried the Porterfield R4S and didn't really care for them. The Ferodo DS2500 had better initial bite and also seemed to hold up very well for lapping days.

I have set of front Hawk HPS on my car - about 2000 mi. only, will sell you for $50 shipped. They have no provision for brake wear sensor.

I don't really do any track days, but do a lot of auto-xing. So, overheating the brakes isn't really an issue for me. I guess I'm looking for brake pads that have a good initial bite. I am also running in a stock class, so I have to keep the stock rotors.

Keith, all,
How much brake dust do you get with the DS2500's?
Also- how good/bad are the stock pads? (i.e. how well would those work for an occasional AutoX?)
I do like Ferodos -I run DS3000's as track pads on my Impreza. I imagine the DS2500's would work great, especially on a car that's 550+ lbs lighter!

The Ferodo's dust about the same as the stock pads ( at least comparing the amount of dust from the R56 pads on the MCS to the dust from the DS2500's on the MC)

The stock pads actually work pretty well, but the Ferodos (and others) are better.

Sweet -thanks Keith!
The car is almost here- docks tomorrow, in fact. Dealer said it would be another week'n'half or more before we can pick it up though.
Sooooon...

Now what- a mere 5 months before NW AutoX season starts up again?

Our last event for 2007 is sunday in Bremerton. Our first event for 2008 will be January 25th... in Everett. So, only 3 months to wait.

I've use Green Stuff and Textar pads.

The Green stuff seemed to work well on for Street and AutoCross but did suffer fade on the track after a couple of hot laps...

The Textar seem to hold up better on the track as far as fade was concerned but they only lasted 5000 Miles !!!
and that was One track day and a couple of Autocrosses ... i'll be looking for something else ...
Maybe try the Ferodo

I like the EBC Reds for street/autocross. I've only compared them to OEM though.

Stock, as in OEM stock.

You don't want to brake too much in a MINI as it is.. They are momentum cars!!! The OEM stuff is fine for street and autocross use as brake temps never get to a point where the pads start to fade.

Yep - me too. Even running the A6. Next year with less traction I'll have to be even more gentle with the OEM brakes to ensure I never trip the anti-lock.

Which makes me curious Saturn5... Where on the East/West course were the brakes an issue? I am interested in the details of the problem you encountered which prompts this inquiry. I know you did not have a close encounter with the Porta-Pottie in the "Spin, Flip & Die" element on the East Course, right?

Kind regards,

Charlie
