i transport my track tires inside.. they fit perfectly standing up kinda like this --> 0000 and then i run some straps to tie them down, I use the hooks the rear seats latch onto when they are not folded and then the bars that hold the seatbelt in the front (have to find a better place as i dont want the force of the tires and me in an accident) Its nice and clean and gives you space infront of the tires and in the trunk for all your gear... I get 4 tires, all my tools for the track and a weeks worth of luggage in there with no problems. I wouldnt recommend driving without strapping the wheels down, if you get into an accident they will crush you.
We have a Honda Element that handles the ice chest, dog (and related dog care stuff), folding chairs, brolly, and four wheels/tires will fit nicely too.
With the 16s and shorter 17s, I do the two on left like this II and the two on the right like this = that way I can still see out the back window. The taller 17s make me have to go like this IIII.

Getting to a track day with 6 is getting a little hard, what with all of the other stuff I take. I usually stack like this: = ll , but if I have to take 6, I usually have small tires with me as well, so 3 lay flat behind my head, one vertical, but with the face of the wheel right up against the back of the passenger seat, and then the other 2 vertical, with their tread up against THAT tire.
I can then fit my tool box, air pig, jack, jack stands, a seat to sit on while changing tires, 2 clothing bags, a cooler and my helmet all in the car.
My car also came with a roof rack, so I use that occasionally.
That being said, I think I am in the market for a trailer and hitch.
