Great report AND finish. I wish I could have made the event, 3.5 hours away for me.

Yes, 3R is gnarly on brakes. My friend runs a '99 Cobra there as an instructor with the BMW and Audi quattro club and routinely cracks rotors - sometimes in half! I hope that the JCW upgrade will cure the brake problem but, somehow I just don't think it will be enough. Sounds like the rules are factory optioned only upgrade. ATE makes a wonderfully large brake kit for the front of the R53. Also, didn't the MINI Challenge Club Sports have the JCW AP Racing 330mm brakes installed by the factory (motorsport werks department)...?

Keep up the great work Randy

Randy, I had no idea that brake issues were as extreme as you alluded prior to the race. Now, I understand so much better... I have never pushed a car, or its brakes to such limits. Wow.

You guys ran a smart race, again! Congrats on your highest finish, and getting some well-deserved proceeds as well.

Planning on a long trip to Miller (UT)?

We DID have brake ducts . . we even took out the fender liners. We did everything we were allowed to do under the rules which, unfortunately, was not enough.

randy and co.: congrats on your best finish to date! it is a shame, however, that the governing body (at a very high level of competition) won't allow you to have brakes as good as many of us running DE's have.....rules is rules, i guess....

Yes, we are going to Miller. I did a track day there two weeks ago. It will be interesting. . .

The brake issue at 3r was so extreme, it caught us by surprise. It was our 1st trip there.

The stock Mini brakes are inadequate for racing but, at least they have still been there at the end of the race. We carry plenty of spares normally, but ran out quickly. We used over $1000 just in rotors !! . . and I still owe Alain two sets!!!

We will completely rethink this before next year. The picture above says it all . . .

I've read the hype about "frozen rotors".....does that actually make any difference.....if so, could you get away with cryogenic treatment of OEM rotors?

I don't know but would love to hear some feedback from anyone who has tried it. I have done the 'cryo' treatment on other parts (pistons, valves, etc) and it appears to work. I don't know about brakes.

Thanks for the quality input.

Brakes . . .

. . . one other comment regarding brakes.

Five of the top six finishers were Honda's/Acura's. The Honda's brakes are the size of flying saucers. . .

We talked to the HART Honda guys who were pitted next to us and their race strategy was the same . . . save the brakes. They love the brake size but are struggling with ABS problems.

We all have our demons, I guess.

Thanks to Randy and the entire RSR crew, I and everyone from our team staff had a great time.

While it would have been fun to have a few laps, the experience was fantastic. Seeing 3 cars together in the paddocks was a treat and provided us the opportunity to exchange more than a few ideas. We also had our local race to concentrate on but that's for another tread with a full report coming shortly.

The RSR boys are truly first class and their level of professionalism is at the top right there with any other team on the grid.

Keep-up the good work. A podium is definitely a possibility soon.

All I know, I've read online at sites like this - Diversified Cryogenics' Frozen Rotors. TireRack sells them.

Umm . . . let's see. The GS cars are about +/- 8 seconds a lap faster than the ST cars (3:10's vs 3:18's).
That means you should put a lap on us at about 25 laps. The race went 45 laps last year.

I guess that means you will pass once and we will see you in our rear view mirror towards the end.

When you make that pass . . . be kind and look for the point by !!

What car will you driving?

Randy

Randy, I'm glad you guys are going to make Miller. Have you checked with Todd at TCE? He is well-respected brake guy... and as I recall, located in AZ.

Dwnshift, do you have a MINI? Just curious as to what brings you here. Heck, you're more than welcome here of course.

Thanks Tony . .. I'll look into it. We have the JCW brakes on the way so hopefully that will be a step in the right direction.

FYI . . . . 'Dwnshift' drove for RSR at Mid Ohio and Barber in the 197 car.

Ah, that's the connection! I do seem to recall that now. Too dang busy these days...

Good luck with the JCW's. Todd is a good guy, and would share what he knows... Again, congratulations on the progress.

Glad to hear you will be out in the x-HP Ranch car. As Randy said, watch for the point by and wave as you roar by. Look forward to seeing you, I hope the weather will be a seasonale 75 degrees not the 105 you experienced earlier.

See you soon

Mark

It will be good to see you guys again. Wish it wasnt a combined race and there was an empty mini seat!

One of our customers just purchased the car form HP Rand and we are 'scheduled' to campaign a full season in 08 GS.
I love racing in the mini and the RSR guys are great to be with.
we are looking for cooler weather as well.it really back that timing out.
