Quick Disconnect Wheel

This is what you want . . . from Minimania.

http://new.minimania.com/web/Item/NM.../InvDetail.cfm

I have a QD on my race car but it requires welding. This is a bolt on and could be considered temporary. I've never actually seen one . . I don't know anyone who has one.

Yea, the one Randy is directing you to is the only one made that will fit the Mini steering shaft. BUT, two things. One is that these are WAY expensive. The only custom part that they had to make for this to fit the Mini is that hex coupler, the part that actually slides on and bolts to the Mini shaft. $275 for this VAC while the exact same parts for a standard 3/4 shaft would cost you about $100.
Second, .... these hex couplers are always welded to the shaft on race cars, but this VAC is only held in place with a single center bolt. Ask Steve, these things almost always come loose!

I'll look at this tomorrow and see if there is another (cheaper and safer) answer.

Randy, if you guys are using this, think about epoxy.

There are too many randys on this damn board LOL . I have had this system on my car for about 2 years now , maby 15k miles. So far so good as far as staying tight . I've had afew others drive the car including Will Turner and no one has felt anything unusual. It might be a bit expensive but at this point I do not know of an alternative.

Randy(M7), could you put a bigger pic up, ... I can't quite see what kind of crumbs those are on the floor.
I know three people who have this same quick disconnect, and two have had loosening problems, in fact one had their wheel come off in their hands just before a race. Just be careful, odds are against you ...

By the way Randy(M7)..... get that DVD to Peter! Your supposed to share!

Quick Disconnect

1) Randy (M7) you need to edit and resize that picture. It screwed up my screen resolution. Not sure why . . . my old computer crashed so I bought a new one that has windows 'Vista'. It seems to reset the resolution automatically. My screen is now about 3 feet wide ! . . . not sure I like vista.

2) Back to the subject . . . a few years ago, when I wanted to put a racing wheel on my Mini there was NO adaptor that would allow the turn signals to cancel and allow the horn to work. After a lot of investigation . . . I found a BMW steering adaptor made by MOMO that fits the Mini steering shaft (if anyone wants to know the part number, just ask and I'll go find it and post the number).

Anyway . . . I had to have some simple machine work done. I now have a hub adaptor that fits the mini shaft . . . cancels the turn signals . . . the horn still works. We made up half a dozen and all the street racers in AZ are using them.

I will assist if anyone wants to make one.

. . . do you remember me? I bought one of your intercoolers for my Grand Am race car. We were doing some dyno work this week . . . we took off the M7 and tried a 'Forge' intercooler. The Forge has better flow numbers on the bench so we wanted to see what it would do.

The Forge worked better and actually gave us a temporary spike of almost 10 more HP . . . we were excited . . . but only for two runs. Then the heat soaking kicked in . . . end result . . .YOUR M7 cooler is better. Just thought you would like to know. . . . If you could build it it a little bigger and increase the flow numbers, that would be really outstanding. The direct flow of air through the IC makes it more efficient.

Sorry about the drive in size pic I dont knowwhat happened there
The wheel adapter you came up with sounds like a good upgrade. I had to add extrqa buttons and build a IR system to have horn buttons on the wheel. A pain to be sure but they work ok.
I am gald that you had a chance to check the different IC'S back to back. I do remember you guys and look forward to seeing how you do this season. Do give Peter a call when you get a chance I know he would like to talk about your findings in more detail. Good luck in 07!

MOMO #2008

A few people have asked me about the MOMO 2008 adaptor and how it was machined to fit. If you do this, it will allow the turn signals to cancel and the horn to work. You will obviously need a wheel that has a horn button.

The adaptor WILL still work without the machine work but you must remove the plastic piece discussed below.

There is a rotating plastic 'device' under the wheel. This device protects the wire loom that carries the horn electrical and other steering wheel mounted electrical items. As you can see, you will need to cut down the outer diameter of the 2008 adaptor to fit inside the plastic device. You will also need to drill two oblong shaped cutouts. An additional hole will need to be drilled for a plastic post to fit through.

When you have the plastic device in your hand, this will all become obvious.

Lastly, and VERY IMPORTANT . . . when you cut down the diameter of the hub, cut as LITTLE as necessary to fit. If you cut too deeply you can weaken the hub assembly.

Hope this helps . . .

Randy

Randy,

Pictures no longer work - wish they did because I need to figure out what I'm going to do with the following situation! I brought my car into the dealership about 2 years ago for them to replace my defective steering angle sensor, and they damaged the piece you are talking about above, referred to by MINI as the "switch turn something something something" (it was cut off at the end of the part number 61-31-6-946-958). That piece, as you described, has the connections for the airbag, horn, cruise control, and volume controls - obviously on my multifunction steering wheel, some devices aren't included on other wheels.

I'm going to purchase the MOMO 2008 part for the MINI - ugh, MOMO parts on a full-out Sparco branded car, yuck - but want to know how the switch turn piece you describe above works with the MOMO part. Is it required to cancel the turn signals? Is it required just for the MOMO piece to even fit in the car? What can you tell me about having it removed completely and installing the MOMO piece in its place, which is what I'm going to have to do since all the wires are damaged inside the switch turn thanks to a bunch of monkeys at my old dealership!!!

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the pictures. I just ordered a momo wheel and the hub #2008 and will be installing them on monday. However , I was searching on bimmerforums for the e36 hub # 2008 and came up with a diffrent picture which is below. So i pretty much placed a order for a e36 hub. Did i order the wrong one or am i missing something ?? Thanks in advance.

When you pull off the plastic ring housing the copper horn contact ring it will look like the machined one but without the machining.

Oh yeah...the tab on the back of the hub needs to be machined off too.

Once you pull the OEM wheel off it will make a lot of sense. There is a white plastic ring at the top of the column that has what looks to be locater pin, that why the hole along the perimeter is required. There is also a large plastic tab that mimics the tab pictured on the hub, thats what the machining in the center is for.

Lucky! I bought my MOMO #2008 three weeks ago and they're not shipping it until the Sparco wheel i want comes in stock from Sparco's headquarters in Italy.... I'm || that close to saying screw it and going with a MOMO one, but for some reason I don't think Sparco would be too happy considering I'm trying for sponsorship with them and don't have anything BUT Sparco stuff in my car......

3 weeks is a pretty long time. The place I got my momo wheel from takes them a day to get a steering wheel in. I am going to go on monday and order a sparco one instead of the momo I got so I should have everything done by tuesday hopefully.

Thats what most folks do. There is a thread around here on that for the seats. Think it had some step by step instructions too.
