Octane MINI winter overhaul
#26
With the first week-end at 15 lbs, last week at 7lbs, we were able to remove another couple of lbs. this week-end. So a grand total of approx. 24 lbs.
The pictures shows the stuff we removed over the last 2 week-ends. The hood latch, cables, a bunch of useless brackets, a few bolts chopped-off, etc.
That's where it will stay for another week.

Another productive week-end:
Window regulator+motor+ miscellaneous bits: 7 lbs
Passenger window: 10 lbs
Greg, we are getting closer to our very own case of beer . But the last few lbs. will be much harder to find. You'll deserve your case of beer if you get there.
Does anybody have a good supplier for (cheap - that's an oxymoron...)Titanium straight pipes?

Another productive week-end behind us. Let's add another 10 lbs. that bites the dust! Mainly from the HVAC system taking a superfast diet and some strategic metal. Sorry, no more details on this one! You can always enlarge the picture!
I think we are now up to 49 lbs... Hopefully another 25 lbs coming....

And we removed a few more grams here. Battle scars from the season. Wet-sanding works wonders....
We also took the windshield out. But I guess that doesn't count part of our diet, since we will "gain it back". I know: B-O-R-I-N-G. But you won't say we forget the details...

While I was enjoying or should I say trying to find the missing Florida sun, my army of volunteers (yeah right, thanks L-P ) found some time to continue the awesome work and managed to shed another 13 lbs. So the tally stands at 62 lbs removed so far. Funny how much useless metal, wires and plastic can weight....
More to come , see below!

Oh yeah, forgot. Another 2 lbs removed in wires and door locks. If we say the trailing arms save 12 lbs., that's 76 lbs removed so far over the winter. Our objectives are met. Thanks Greg for showing us the way . I think we're done.... (at least with the car ).
I can now also officially announce that I hate lead weights. They do nothing but beat-up the car's interior when you take them in and out. So we're into refreshing the interior with a fresh coat of paint. Nothing but the best...well not quite a body shop job, but Krylon makes some good products. May be I should go after them for sponsorship. Is Mr. Krylon reading?
Dr. O, no pictures today, you should be happy!

A quick update. We visited our favorite machine shop today to machine some suspension pieces. Details here, in case you weren't following:

As a side note, may be we should visit him more often. Nice parts on the workbench....
Unfortunately not for a MINI... (yet )
Free race passes to the first person who can identify the application (I choose the race...). Yes it's an M62. So you can't win if you mention this. Just which car it's going to be fitted to....

The fuse box will be re-located below the passenger airbag cover. Tough choice: we could have gone for a lower position (better to keep the weight low), but decided to keep the electricals away from the elements. Water tends to accumulate on the floor when it rains. Plus no more passenger window. Up it goes!

Nice white electrical tape for the "shadow" look of what's remaining of the exposed wires....
Radios now on the floor so no more searching for the damn wires on top of your shoulders when you drive and there's no feedback at the other end of the line. Did I mention that low weight is good? Yes, then I must be getting old....
