What series can heavily modified MINIs be raced in? Strom Racing is thinking of campaigning a turbocharged Cooper S (such as the Madness kit) in BMWCCA D-Mod, but we would like to have other series to race the car in. SCCA doesn't have a National category that fits. The only other place I can think of is Phil Wicks' Series in the unlimited class. Are there any other classes/series in which the MINI fits?

 

To my knowledge it would be
"open" class... that's what one of the Gals on the east coast is racing her TCed MCS in...

You can run in NASA's Performance Touring (PT). depending on your mods. The base is PTE but with mods you maybe in PTC or higher. I'm running PTC this weekend.

 

Also NASA GTS class looks very good. It may be the other class I will run in besides BMWCCA.
Depending on your region you can run SCCA ITE.

 

Isn't NASA GTS for German manufacturers only? Is the MINI considered German or English?

Also, he's looking for more national level competition, so ITE is out, I believe. Does anyone know whether SCCA is considering slotting modified MINIs into any National classes?

Mini is German

 

D-Modified in BMW club racing is a gerat place to run, you can be compeive especially if you have a 300 hp Mini. I have been racing in D-mod for since March of '05, was in J-prepqred before until pulleys became illegal after I started placing class poles & podium finishes. Scca has the SPO class for unlimited cars oiver 2.5 liters & Nasa has the GTS class which requires your Dyno sheet and your cars weight to determine your class.
I believe the Phil Wicks series will allow a class for unlimited Minis next year as well. Just finished racing here in St. Louis and place 1st overall in Saturday and Sunday's races.

I've yet to see this, though I'm not up on all the minis that are out there racing. You might be right, but I'd like to see a 300hp mini even race, and finish, let alone podium in D-Mod.
I guess time will tell though...

 

Kind of. As German as Bentley and Rolls Royce anyway.

 

I think the issue with 300 hp twin-charged cars is heat and boost. Using turbo-only, it seems like you could still make a fair amount of power and have less complexity. We might explore that avenue, but are still looking at how the car would be classified in other series (besides BMWCCA).
