2 RMW equipped cars break the magical 1:30 barrier at Streets of Willow
I saw you there. I flashed you the V when you were pulling out there. I had the red GLI and my wife had the red MINI. That is an awesome time. Best I could do in the Jetta was barely a 1:39.
I was drooling over your GLI though. Super clean, nice color, tastefully done!
Jan, What suspension mods have you made? I know that you are running a 2.0L engine with one of your heads, 440 injectors, and tune. Any other mods to the motor or chassis? Different pistons for sure. Still the stock crank? Stock pulley for the GP? How about the crank pulley? Stock clutch and flywheel? Are you still running the GSK LSD or are you running the Quaife? Where did your compression ratio end up?
An inquiring mind wants to know.
Thanks

Heheh, yeah.. I guess eventually everyone spins out. This was my first. Going into the dirt sideways at about 100 mph was scary to say the least.
Let me get a plug in here for RMW. I got to experience first hand the difference made by Jan's tune. I ran the car with exact set up as last time. Same tires, suspension settings, 100 octane gas, etc. The car is an 06 JCW. The only thing different is a new tune done by Jan. The over all difference was 1.5 seconds improvement around the track.
For those that are familiar with SOW running it CW, before the tune coming out of the bowl and hitting the back straight, I was able to get into the 4th gear towards the end of the straight and stay in it for about a second and a half before dropping back to 3rd. After the tune, I was able to get into the 4th gear about half way into the straight. Good 200-300 feet earlier.

I am a bit confused with you attributing your 1.5 sec improvement to a tune. As I recall this was your second time at the Streets course . Most people show a marked improvement from their first to second trip to that track as it is one of the slower and more technical circuits in the area. Simply overcoming your first day jitters and having a better understanding of the line yields big dividends yet you were less than 2 seconds quicker? Additionally the ambient temp had to be 15 to 20 degrees cooler than your first event this past fall which is noticeable with the R-53. If the minimal improvement was due to the tune , did you not feel as if you were driving any better yourself ?Overall the Mini's looked like they put up a good showing . Sean is a very talented past professional driver and I am sure gave them a good run for the money. it is nice to see that the Minis came off looking a lot better than the recent Eurotuner and Street Tuner Challenge debacles . Nice job guys

No problem with a spin out. You never know how far to push it until you push it too far

This was my 3rd trip to SOW, 2nd time running CW. Here is were I talk smack: I do not consider myself a beginning driver. I will not say where my experience came from for reasons that should be obvious. I am a quick learner. I do not find it difficult to find the proper line around the track. Usually a few laps are sufficient. I had faster or similar times my first time at SOW as guys who've been there several times.
Please do not take this as me trying to say I am a great driver. I think I am pretty good, but I do not have delusions of grandeur (normally
) I am just trying to explain where my opinion on the tune comes from.To answer your previous question, I in fact do not feel like I was driving better myself. I had an off day. Happens, I guess. My head was not in it and I was making some fundamental mistakes. The wrong suspension set up, not accounting for the ambient, track and tire temps and subsequent spin which did scare me threw me for a loop and caused me to be more conservative the rest of the day. That being said I base my statement on the fact that while driving the same line as previous time out I was able to achieve higher speeds in the straights and get to my shift points a lot earlier in sections due to better and more usable torque curve. This observation was also confirmed by my co-driver.
To bottom line it. I think a 1.5 second on a 1:32/lap track is not that small. Have I had a better day personally I feel I could have gone into mid or low 1:31's. Hope I explained myself clearly.
I think we need to set-up a MINI challenge there like the Foci did. We could get some of the vendors to sponsor it and offer prizes. It shouldn't be a whole lot of money to do it in tandem with a track day like it was done on Saturday. Maybe we could even get that much wanted vendor time attack.

Better yet, how about 3 or 4 different types of cars, but in a private day at the track. Like Mini, Dub, Audi ? Limit it to about 20 or so per make. I think it would draw more vendors/sponsors, especially if you keep the types of cars similar to those that would draw the same sponsors. Kind of a EuroChallenge?

I'm absolutely dead tired... was up at 3am this morn and off to the track
we were testing new parts today.......... the fastest cars on the track today had a Big Red R.............on them.... I will post up some video and pics in the next few days as I am headed for a short vacation
