01/07/06 Point Reyes Run & Whale Watching
If you missed our December Run (and even if you made it) you won't want to miss our January Run. We will be driving over a few of the same roads, but this will be primarily a field trip to Point Reyes National Sea Shore. January is reported to be the very best month to view the gray whale migration from Alaska to Baja California where the females deliver their calves. In March, they head back to Alaska.
Our run will start in Western Santa Rosa, driving back roads through Sebastopol and out to the coast. We will stop at the Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center at Drakes Beach for lunch. Bring a picnic lunch, BBQ, or eat at the Drakes Beach Cafe. Restrooms, picnic tables, and bbq are available.
After lunch we will head down to the Point Reyes Historic Lighthouse. Bring your walking shoes, warm jacket, umbrella, and binoculars to view the whales. The run will end in Point Reyes, so spend as much time as you like visiting the park as weather permits. Leave when you like or join the convoy back to Novato to Moylans Brewery and Restaurant for an early dinner and conversation.
For more information and to RSVP refer to the REME MegaBBS.

January run route revision
I drove the route today and did not like the part of the run in western Santa Rosa. So I revised the route. We will meet in downtown Graton at around 8:45am (there are a few places to get coffe and its a charming little place) to leave by 9:15am.
Those of you from out of the area, this is actually easier... take SR-116 north-west from Cotati... thru Sebastopol... takes you right to Graton. Email me if you need instructions.
I simplified the route on SR-1 also. Please download the latest map prior to the run. The rest stays the same. I look forward to seeing a big crowd on our January run!
Nobody answers the phone at Drakes Beach Cafe. Their website insists that they are open on weekends and people have verified that they are. I am not sure how many people that the cafe can accomodate, therefore I think many of us should plan on bringing a picnic lunch or at least food to fall back on if the restaurant is full. A BBQ and picnic facilities are available at Drakes Beach.
I need to get an idea of how many people will be joining us for dinner at Moylans Brewery and Restaurant Saturday night. I have a tentative reservation for 25 people but we now have 32 cars which RSVP'd for the run already (24 from REME & 8 from NorCal), and I expect at least a couple of more from MOASF. I would like to confirm a reservation with Moylans by Friday morning 01/06/06. Can you please indicate by filling out the online poll or email with the number of people to attend dinner by Thursday night? Thanks in advance.

Point Reyes Run
Is the continued stormy weather affecting any of the areas on the route set up for the MINI run on the 7th? Although the storm will be moving on, i was just curious. I'm about 3 hours south of the area and wanted to plan for the run, but am unsure of the road conditions.
I am sure that the rain will leave a few more chuck holes in the roads... and I guarantee there is currently road debris, but despite what you have heard on the news, the flooding around here is no where near as bad as past years and I don't think that we will have any problems. The road crews repair and clean roads quickly except in the rare case of slides. On Thursday we will check road conditions and make minor changes to the route if necessary. Coleman Valley Road is the only road that kind of concerns me because its not the easiest or best maintained road to drive on under normal conditions and weather.

I wanted to thank everyone that attended. This would be no fun without the continued support of our past members as well as the participation of new members. It was great to see existing members and so much fun to meet all the new people. I tend to be a little shy and quiet, so if we have not met be sure to introduce yourself to me at our next run or event. And everyone, remember to wear your name tags.
If someone has an accurate count of cars I would love to know what it was... my best recollection is 28-29 from Graton, another who joined us in Tomalas, (3) from MOASF that met us at Drakes Beach, and another we met enroute to Moylans, to total 34 cars. I know a few REME who signed up did not make it as well as a lot of Norcal members. It was definitely their loss despite the fact we had some fog and a little rain.
What a great day!!! I hope everyone had the chance to walk down to the light house and back up... Again thank you everyone!

Thanks for the pix.
It is a beautiful area.
Although I am in So. CA, that area is one I have visited several times and I love it. Never had a chance to visit in the MCS and you have inspired me to do so! Great roads, great landscape...and nearby Bolinas is a favorite.

great run. it was worth the trip(from Salinas area) to the lighthouse and surrounding areas despite some of the road conditions-I'm still getting dirt off my MINI! Count me in on future runs. Thanks to Norm and Jessica again.
So who washed their car on Saturday night? ...Sunday?... just curious
Now that we have successfully finished another REME event, please visit the REME MegaBBS calendar and sign up early for our upcoming events. We have events scheduled through September, 2006.
February 12 is just a little over a month away. Those of you that have trouble with Saturday runs because of work or those living in the Cental Valley or south of the Bay, here's your chance to join REME on another 30+ car run! The February run will start in Suisun City and end 170 miles later in Dublin.

whale or shark?
I dunno...I think that is a shark...If you view the original high res version (cropped from 8 megapixels) you'll notice a small row of buoys - probably from a fish net. I think that is a shark having fun...
