Oil Control Solenoid Repair

Has anyone on here done this themselves? The dealership wants $2,200 to install it and I'm contemplating doing it myself. I read somewhere that there is soldering involved but I didn't see anything about it in the material Mini sends with the retrofit kit. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

By “oil control solenoid”, are you referring to the one on the oil pump? To fully replace that one, you need to remove the passenger side axel and drop the oil pan, so I can see it costing almost that much. Still seems high.

There was a repair harness offered as a TSB on those, which did not require dropping the pan. My local dealer quoted my ~$250 for that repair.

Either fix listed above does not require any wire splicing. If you are slightly mechanically inclined, you could probably handle either one in a Saturday afternoon.

Thanks! That's the repair I was referring to. The oil from the leak already migrated up the harness and killed my DME. I'm working on sorting that out myself because the dealership wanted $3,200 to replace it.

Thats the TSB and info, we have an aftermarket solution now under bremmen parts.

We dont carry the new or used DME, maybe get a used DME and keys and have it reprogrammed? Or repaired otherwise it a new one and has to be flashed by MINI dealer.

Doesn't sound like you need to replace the complete solenoid as we've done more of these than I can count.
Most of the time we can do just the kit:

Then we can also replace the rest of the wiring back to the ECU by just running it seperately. Far easier than taking apart the existing wiring.
