Reoccurring Check Engine Light
Reoccurring Check Engine Light
My 2014 Countryman S gives off 2 check engine light codes: P054b (Cold start B Camshaft Position Timing over retarded) and P13C9 (VANOS exhaust control fault camshaft stuck). My first mechanic told me that as long as I keep my oil level full the CELs should go away. They don't. They turn off ans come right back on almost every day. My second mechanic told me to replace the camshaft position sensors, which I did. Still, no dice. I still intermittently get these codes. I feel no actual problems with the car when I'm driving. No shaking, nothing like that.
What's causing this? The fix? Anything I can do to at least get rid of the lights for a few months so I don't have to reset them every day?

Did you change the Vanos solenoid? Known problem and cheap to change.
The code is pointing to the camshaft adjustment unit. They are what physically change the cam timing. They do sometimes quit working. If you are going to change them you should probably do your timing chain as well.

Seen where aftermarket filter material over time finds it's way down stream plugging the Vanos selenoid valve's tiny microscreens. They determine adjustment of cam. Why going to thicker oil and/or using anything but OEM filters in the N14/16/18 engines can be risky.
