Front End Noise????????

Hello All,

I have a 2014 Paceman S All4. I have a were-ing noise in my front end, it sounds like from the driver's side. I started hearing it some time ago and initially thought it was from my badly worn tires. After changing over to snow tires the noise was still there. I then thought it was a wheel bearing but the noise doesn't seems to change when corning, it increases with speed, and is quite loud. With the tire raised off the ground there is no noticeable movement when attempting to rock the tire vertically. So can it still be the wheel bearing? What else should I be looking for if not?

Thanks
Jack

A wheel bearing doesn't have to be lose to make noise. If the sound is persistent when changing from summer to winter tires, and back, I would still suspect wheel bearing.

Thanks for the response, it appears no one else could venture a guess. I ordered the new bearing and hope that will take care of it. Appreciate your thoughts!

Is it advisable to replace wheel bearings in pairs? My son's Paceman has 104K and needs a bearing. Have been wondering if I should do both on that end of the car (or even all 4) as preventive maintenance.

I certainly believe in replacement in sets, but it’s up to you. Doing both sides on the same day when your mind is in it might be better than having to schedule another day to replace the other side a week or so later.

At 107K I would certainly consider replacing them in pairs. I only replaced the one front bearing as I only have 46K miles on mine. That one bearing was certainly bad for sure. When rotating the new bearing by hand it was nice and tight and smooth. When rotating the original bearing it felt like the ball bearing were square, you could feel it click as it moved, although still rather tight. That bearing had been bad for some time now.

Thanks for the replies. I’ll do at least the pair on the same axle. Might do all 4. I figure at that mileage they could go at any time.

Thanks. Does anyone know the bolt size for mounting the bearings? The Bentley manual for the R56 indicates M10 x 30 but I don’t know if the R60/R61 are the same. I miss newtis.

RealOEM can still be a good resource for information:
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...&diagId=31_091

It says the bearing bolts are M12 x 30

Thanks, Nik. Over the long, cold winter, I temporarily forgot about RealOEM. I hope BMW can't take that away from us.
