R60/R61 Stock Problems/IssuesDiscussions related to warranty related issues and repairs, or other problems with the OEM parts and software for R60 AND R61 MINI Cooper and Cooper S MINIs.
I'm new to the forums, and to Mini's. Just got a 2011 Cooper S Countryman about 3 weeks ago, test drove it and had no problems (at least not obvious ones, nor engine light). I have just been driving it to work and back about 6-10 miles a day in town. After about a week an engine light came on, so I took it to advanced to use there obd scanner, and they say the code is for the auxiliary water pump.(I remember her murmuring something that I didnt catch and she was off back inside, so I didnt think anything of it). So I order the part, $39. (On my way home I noticed the light went off before I got home. The next 2 days i could recreate the check engine light coming on and going off. If the light was on when I shut the car off, it would be on when when I started it back up, and if I accelerated faster than normal it would turn off until I hit around 50ish or I accelerated faster than normal again.) So I get the part and replace it, wasn't hard as I am use to tearing apart dirt bike motors to get them running again. I take it for a drive to make sure it's working correctly, accelerat fast to try to make the code come up and it does. So I take it back to advanced and a different person tells me I have the aux water pump code showing, and 6 stored codes. (2C57, 2C91, 28A0, 2BC0, 93D0, 5E31, and the aux water pump code I didnt take a picture of). So knowing I just replaced the aux water pump, I drive home and open the hood. I can hear what sounds like liquid passing through something and an electric motor noise, so I assume it's the aux water pump working. (While the code is showing). I'm certain I installed the aux water pump correctly, which is why I'm unsure why the code is still being thrown.
I have took the car on the interstate from one exit to another and the engine light came on while I was accelerating down the on ramp. The car will do 80 at least, I didnt want to go faster for fear of braking something. Just normal driving I notice it accelerates better sometimes than others. I don't have much of a reference to how it should accelerate or drive as I'm suspecting it had the problems the whole time and I just didnt notice. Anybody that could shed some light on the codes or why the aux water pump sounds like it's working but throws a code, would help me a lot.
Your all professionals in my book. Thank you
always clear codes before doing anything and see what comes back...you dont know if this was stored before you got the car or when the battery was replaced.
also, get yourself a mini/bmw obd reader where you can read and erase codes. I personally have carsoft i910, other members use carly.
after clearing the codes, whatever pops back is then due for investigation/research to fix.

is the carly one just an app with a bluetooth adapter?, would it be as accurate as a regular obd reader

Is the obd reader your using better than what other members use or is it just a little cheaper but can still do the same things?

$39 for the aux water pump is really cheap. I just had to buy a new one because I broke one of the hose nipples off. I paid right around $100 for the OEM replacement part.
I and several others use the Swaben scan tool from ECS Tuning. It is very good. It will read all of the BMW specific codes and reset them. Also will register a new battery, which I’ve seen folks who have paid the dealership $125 for the battery registration alone! The tool has paid for itself, for me, at least 3 times over in the past week alone!
im not sure about all of the codes, I would suggest what was already said, and clear them all, then see what comes back. Unfortunately I have a bit of experience with the 2C57 code. It was related to low boost pressure/plausibility. It ended with a turbo replacement. Unfortunately some of the symptoms sound eerily similar to mine. Accelerating under a light load, like a slight incline at highway speeds and it would trip limp mode and give me that code. The wastegate in these cars wear out prematurely due to the vacuum duty cycle that they operate on. For the time being, try downshifting (even with an auto trans) before the incline or need to accelerate. This raises the rpms and boost pressure and worked to prevent the code and limp mode until I was able to replace the turbo. As well as preserving my sanity. As far as the rest......many here are MUCH more knowledgeable than I am. Take their advice.
just my $.02
good luck and keep us posted
Update:
I brought it to the mini dealership today. They said I have an air leak (turbo intake hose has a crack in it), and there is a code for the turbo itself. But! Being positive, the air leak could be the reason for the turbo fault. On the other hand if it doesn't fix the turbo code, I have an extended warranty on the turbo and they said it would be a free $4000 repair. So either way I'm in the clear, but I hope I don't have to come back to get the turbo replaced. A brand new turbo wouldn't be bad though lol
You ok either way then. Nice! I missed the warranty extension by a month as far as I can tell. Just replaced mine myself...... I’d say I’m jealous, but I’m not really, it great that it’s in the warranty extension coverage. That should at least give you some piece of mind that it’ll be taken care of, I’m glad. I think a lot more should be covered. And no, nothing at all wrong with having a new turbo, lol! If at all like mine, it caused a slow loss in power, barely perceptible over time, so the new one made a dramatic improvement in performance. Who knows, maybe this will pep it up?
Post what they end up doing to fix it.
They replaced the turbo intake pipe and told me if the check engine light came on to schedule an appointment and they would replace the turbo. Well it came on, took longer than usual though, so Monday after I get off work I'm dropping it off and should get it Wednesday maybe

Really? What a pain... they should have driven it to test it while hooked up so they can monitor boost and pulled the O2 sensor to check the wastegate.....but whatever, at least they are going to replace it for you so the extra trip is worth it.
Glad to hear they are taking care of it. Nice to know that you won’t have to worry about it for nice long while though, amiright? Let us know how it feels after. If you can notice a difference and to be sure that your CEL stays off this time! Good luck. Even though I ended up replacing mine myself, it’s a nice feeling just knowing that all those new parts are in there! Piece of mind is sometimes worth a little extra trip or whatever it takes.
Forgot to post a finished update, been having fun!
So, after the mini dealership installed the new turbo, (covered by factory extended warenty), I can feel a decent difference. I wouldn't say it's a substantial difference, but its definitely enough to make me notice what I was missing. Take off is better, about the same...kinda.... but the real difference was in the top end, like about 80-100mph. It was sluggish in the top end, almost like it didn't want to try to go faster. But now it's like, let's go! Lol
Now the invoice says "TURBO CHARGER WASTE GATE NOT SEALING, FAULT FOR BOOST PRESSURE TO LOW. INSPECTED TURBO WASTE GATE
ROD AND FOUND EXCESSIVE SHAFT PLAY." And then it says replaced turbo and charged battery.
all in all, I'm very pleased with the service. They were very knowledgeable, polite, and I feel like they finished the job fairly quick also. Two thumbs up
