R60/R61 Stock Problems/IssuesDiscussions related to warranty related issues and repairs, or other problems with the OEM parts and software for R60 AND R61 MINI Cooper and Cooper S MINIs.
My car is a 2013 Cooper S Countryman. I just replaced the air filter and spark plugs. The filter is OEM and the plugs are NGK 95770. I checked the gaps on the plugs and all seemed fine (~0.03"), and used dielectric grease on install. I'm sure that the coils are original -- the car has just under 59000 miles.
Now I have a check engine light. The first thing I did was check that all of the ignition coil connections are good and pins straight and that the coils are seated. That all seems good. I also checked that the air filter housing top is seated. Then I noticed that when changing the air filter, something (a sensor, I assume) became disconnected. See the red circle below.
I reconnected it but there is no change -- still Check Engine. I then took a short drive around the block -- honestly, I don't notice anything. It didn't seem rough. It seems like it might be a little loud but I suspect that's my imagination and the fact that I turned off the A/C and radio so that I could listen.
I would appreciate any advice. Am hoping to avoid a trip to the dealer.
First step is to check OBD codes. If you don't have a reader head on over to auto parts store that will do it for free. Could be something that will go away with some drive cycles, if you are lucky.
Thanks, I'll take it to the parts store tomorrow. I'm tempted to put the old plugs back in to see what happens but I think it's best to leave it be until morning. Maybe I'll feel less stupid by then.
I found the circled part (the one I accidentally disconnected while changing the air filter) on RealOEM. RealOEM parts diagram
Unfortunately, the diagram shows it but doesn't provide details. It must appear in another diagram but I haven't been able to find it.
Following Minnie's advice, I took the car to Advanced Auto to get the codes. Only, when I started the car today, there was no check engine light. I decided to go anyway, to see if they could give me a code history. They told me they can only read codes if the light is on (doesn't sound right to me but I don't know enough about it to disagree with him). Light stayed off on the drive home as well. Here's hoping that the car was just temporarily upset about something and has gotten over it.
