Rear Hatch and Wiper

Hello All. This is my first post!

I have a 2011 Cooper All 4.
On Christmas, I closed the rear hatch and it has not opened since.
The indicator light is on telling my rear hatch is open, yet it is completely closed and flush. The rear wiper does not function either.

I have read multiple threads about rear hatch issues, and they have not helped.
There was nothing in the way of the latch when closing the door. There does not appear to be anything stuck in the mechanism. I have scoured the entirety of my car and the owner's manual, and there is no manual release.

I have tried every combination of locking and unlocking doors, both while being inside and then getting out. I have had a companion push while unlocking the hatch. I've had him pull while I was inside pushing. We tried all of this with the two different keys.

I am at a loss. Has anyone had this problem? How does one fix this? Could something be loose inside the rear hatch? When I press the trunk unlock button, I hear a clicking, but nothing happens. I am guessing that the rear wiper is fine and that it is not pivoting because the car thinks the door is open.

Please help. I have no funds to get this fixed at the moment. It is CPO and has an extended warranty, but, it might not be covered.

You may look at the area where the wiring transitions from the hatch to the body - the flex tubing. Maybe there are a few exposed or broken wires in there.

My guess is that it would be something covered by your warranty. Minus any deductible you may have. Just ask the dealer.

Thank you, bjcarter2.
Where in the car is this wiring located, and how do I gain access to it?

Open the hatch and look to the top. You will see the flexible accordion tubing there.

Just squeeze the ends to remove and pull back.

Look at the wires as far as you can see. Use a flashlight as necessary.

Pull on wires gently to see if any move more than others.

At the worst, pull the tailgate interior panel to expose the inner tailgate. Look there too. There should be a brown wire or two that is a common ground. Maybe it has come loose.

Or, take it to the dealer and let them deal with it.

TADA - Discovery made!!!

If you lift the rear seat bottom out or maybe just even lift it up at the front edge, toward the middle forward of the seat belt connectors, you will find a cable with a D-ring on it.

Guess what that does? Yep, it opens the tailgate.

I found this while installing the Schroth Racing Harness in my car. Hopefull this helps you out in getting your car fixed.
