Took delivery of our new '13 CMS just 3 weeks ago. Just noticed within the past week that the driver's seat lounge leather is developing a strange smell. It is coming specifically from the back cushion and smells like a mixture between a dirty wet sponge and a vinyl smell. I first noticed the smell at work after my long commute as the odor was lingering on the back of my shirt. I have not exposed the car interior to rain but on a few hot days I was sweating a bit until the air kicked in. Our '13 Cooper S Convertible also has the lounge leather and it has been just fine. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

 

I wonder if it is the vinyl portions of the seat outgassing?

Okay. It has been 3 weeks and now it smells more like a dead fish. It becomes more noticeable when exposed to direct sunlight.

 

A few questions:

• Are you sure it's the driver seat and not the A/C ? My A/C used to smell like that until I got it sanitized at the dealer.
• Have you noticed any leaks from the door or sunroof seals or any wet spots on the floor?
• Is there any sign of rodents under the seats? I've heard horror stories about dead mice under the seats or even in the upholstery ... which would definitely smell worse when the car heats up.

 

It is definitely the leather and the smell is coming from all leather surfaces.

 

Maybe the oils used to process the leather are going rancid. That's pretty rare, but possible. Have you taken it to the dealer yet?

 

I have not taking it to the dealer yet but I have certainly been contemplating. I also thought about calling MINIUSA first.
