I heard the rattle in the sunroof when I tested it. It only confirmed that I didn't want a sunroof in my CM. I have heard more complaints about this one thing then any other in the Mini Lounge. I have no sunroof, I have no rattles.

Same here, on my R56 I had rattles from day one, same problem with my A3 (although not close to as bad), I have yet to sit in a car with a double pane sunroof that does not rattle. No way I was getting one again. Oh and my CM is noise and rattle free, at least so far.

WOW! Thanks for this thread. I have been pulling my hair out for the last month with this same issue. Going to pull that plug out later.. If you crack your passenger window, either 1/2 inch or all the way down, the banging sound would be very loud. Sometimes it occured with the driver window down too.. I thought it was a loose wireing harness in the headliner for the antenna?? I'm going to pull the plug. Thanks for the thread....

It took forever findng the flap, but I thnk I did. Not in the sunroof area, but after openng the hatch. There are two flaps. One in the upper right and one on the left side. On the car and not on the door.

You are a wonderful human being. How on earth did you discover this fix. My dealer didn't have a clue stating the model was too new.

Thanks for saving me alot more work than need be! and posting the rattle issue. As the weather is getting warmer here in the N.E using windows down as well as sunroof open. for the last few weeks have had exactly what everyone described. I was ready to pull the headliner back down as I had it down a few weeks ago for mods and run some wiring..thought for sure something worked loose and was rattling..even though I was pretty sure I zip tied everything back down. Pulled the plastic ring…and Gone

I saw a two day old R60 yesterday. What I saw when we lifted the hatch was interesting, it didn't have a sunroof, but the drain it does have at the hatch is the R56 style and not the rattling one. It is rubber with no flap. Maybe they got the message and changed it.

I picked up my Countryman last week, and the first thing I did was check the drain plug. It wasn't rattling or anything, but I thought I'd remove it anyway. I was surprised to find there was not a flap at all. Looks like they've changed it.

Dear god... thank you for this thread (and more specifically, whoever figured this out first).

I've been beating my head against the wall for almost 5 months because of this little stupid part. No more noise.

Absolute lifesaver!

I imagine that because of everyone's help, the part was redesigned on the newer CM. Mine is a 06/11 production date and I wanted to share what it looks like now. I am very thankful you all pitched in and let Mini know the problems you were having.

I just took them both out completely.

They're just wedged in there - pull 'em out!

I plan on removing just the thin flippy little "lid" which sits on top of the plastic "ring" -- Are you suggesting "digging out" the entire plastic ring which inserts into the actual body of the Mini ??

I'd take a photo for you, but it's just not complicated...

Pull the tab out - the little plastic holder (smaller than a dime) will come out with it.

Don't remove anything else, especially not the rubber!

I had the same noise on mine and when I took it to the dealer and complained, a service bulletin had come in that day and told them to remove the flaps...

Squeaky sunroof

I have a 2016 countryman with the dual sunroof..
it squeaks all the time .. every teeny tiny bump I hit in the road it squeaks.
I have taken it to the dealer at least 6 or 7 times as sometimes its sounds like its just the sunroof but other times it sounds like the whole back seat is about to fly off...
they were only able to duplicate the sunroof noise twice. Both times they have kept it for about 5 days, have removed the whole headliner have added extra absorbent but aren't able to permanently fix the issue..
now I have my 12 month service next week and again they have to keep the car to inspect the noise.
I love my car, but this sunroof issue is making me second guess keeping it.. and since I have 2 more years left on my lease have to find a crafty way to drown out the noise

I have a 2012 Mini Cooper Countryman S ALL4...my sunroof and my back doors sometimes make a squeaky sound. On the inside of the car it sounds like a suspension squeak. I'm not sure if your experience is the same squeak, but I've found if I clean the rubber door/window seals (even between the rubber folds) and coat them really well with armor all or some sort of car protectant it resolves until they get dusty and dirty again.
I nearly drove myself insane trying to locate and resolve the squeak! Hope this helps!

Yes, have a 2018 Countryman All4 with only 30k miles and the open sunroof rattles! In deducing the problem it seems to be the sunscreen that causes the noise. My dealer too wanted to disassemble the entire roof at a high cost. On further sleuthing I believe a small felt or rubber pad clued in the right place between the sunshade and the rim of the sunroof hole might do the trick and not show. working on the solution this weekend.
