R60 So what's up with the recall?
So what's up with the recall?
So I see all the Cooper S models have a recall including the Countryman! Not too happy about my car possibly bursting into flames. The first time I buy a brand new car and of course there has to be a recall on it. Any one know the details?
Yikes! Thanks for the heads up. I just e-mailed my SA to see if I could schedule early. I want a wash/wax/detail anyway, and between the two things, I'd probably need loaner, so I want to get it all lined up in advance.
Not as big of a deal as the media is making it out to be. Apparently they did a production correction late last year when they recognized the problem. My understanding from the previous problems with turbo BMWs and Rolls, it isn't the water pump but the electronic control module that continues to supply the 12v to the electric water pump to cool down the turbo after the ignition is turned off. Apparently the module is cooked by the heat and the circuit board shorts out and starts the engine fires.
Humm according to this article is does include the countryman

Where to park
So - do you park outside? Or, park in the garage under the kid's room?
Are you safe moving it in after it cools, or does the water dripping on the circuit board happen after cool down?
My MA & SA don't have answers except something about the chance of getting struck by lightning.
So far, when I remember it goes outside.

The superceded part number spoken of in previous post may not be the part used for this recall. It came out in Oct 2011.
Then again, it could end up being the same exact part BUT with a different part number specific to the bulletin but with a lower cost per unit. Will have to see, no word yet.
Meantime, the letters you should be receiving in February will come with instructions on making an appointment with your SA's.
At this time, SA's have not been given any more information than you already have so I would not barrage them with phone calls and emails.

I'd sure like to find out the cause of Alanwells fire from last December. I remember his car coming over the pond about the same time my car did (late April/early May) From what Alanwell posted here, it sure looks like April build dates are also suspect.
Look at the picture he posted, and decide for yourself if the problem was 'fixed' by Feburary build dates.

I don't trust MINI for anything anymore, and I plan to talk to my dealer about having the recall work done on my vehicle before I too have an engine fire.

My car was produced in December 2010 and delivered a year ago today, January 21, 2011. My SA advised they will be receiving the parts to correct the problem some time in February. No additional information was provided other than I would receive a notice in the mail about how to proceed.
Alanwell,
Did MINI ever get back to you on the cause of your engine bay fire? I'm concerned because everything I read about the fires that have occurred, and looking at the picture you posted, sure leads me to think the cause was the same. Could you verify the build date for your car?
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
Last week MINI USA contacted me (after 2 inspections of the fire damage) and said they need to do "destructive testing" and would like to repurchase the vehicle from me. They don't yet know the cause of the fire (or if they do aren't disclosing it). I'm waiting for a repurchase offer before deciding how to proceed.
My CMS was built in March 2011 and would not be covered by the recall.

Flyer53 - yes, my CMS had a spontaneous engine bay fire about 7 weeks ago. More info here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-bay-fire.html
Mini has been investigating but hasn't determined the cause of the fire. My car was built in March 2011, so it wouldn't have been covered under the recall.

Wow….missed that post…So Sorry! I read the recall on motoringfile and most concerns and issues happened with the engine off and parked…mostly for the evening.
I was a 1/2011 build so I am part of that…and waiting to hear as well.
Sorry to hear, at least you were able to react and control it.
Do you think if that fire was not extinguished..and say the mini was parked in a garage for the evening .the fire would of worsened …spread ?
