Absolutely would have spread. The flames from the engine bay were several feet high and getting bigger fast when I put them out with a fire extinguisher. I had just driven out of a public parking garage, I'm grateful that it didn't happen while parked, otherwise I'm certain I would have come back to a smoldering pile of plastic and metal that would have damaged neighboring vehicles as well.
