Just pull up real hard and it will come off with the boot. Then take the boot off and you can install your aftermarket ****. We've been using the Craven *****

Oh, this is an automatic? I don't think I've ever seen how to remove the automatic shift ****.
As for getting out of park, you should be able to press the start/stop button a couple times WITHOUT your foot on the brake and it should let you move it out of park. I do this sometimes on my wife's Clubman to roll it out of the garage without starting it.
edit: I found a few posts that said it's the same for an automatic--just pull up really hard. Some people have replaced their auto shift **** with one that doesn't have a lockout button. Here's a thread:
