Is it mandatory to get GPS updated by dealership? Will it void the factory warranty if I get it updated from someone else?

It doesn't involve a dealer for a 2011 Countryman. Purchase the USB update and plug it in yourself.

Edit: BTW, you need to purchase it through official channels because they are encoded by VIN.

Be very careful purchasing map updates outside official channels...like rkw mentioned the updates are encoded by VIN.

If it's too good to be true, it probably is.

What areas are covered by the GPS maps? USA only? North America? What kind of databases are available? Whose software do they use? Garmin? Tom-Tom?

BMW/MINI use maps from TomTom. The maps here (http://store.minigpsmaps.com/) cover North America.

The original question was whether it is mandatory to get maps from the dealer. The answer is no. But of course you can go to the dealer.

If you dont use the dealer to update your maps, they will find out about it and quite likely repossess your car sometime during the night... or not.
