Clutch and flywheel replacement starting issue

Hey everyone, looking for some mini specific advice here.

I have a 2011 countryman S all4 and just replaced my clutch and flywheel with a single mass flywheel and clutch masters FX300.

after getting everything back together there are some issues starting the car. With the transmission in neutral the car will crank a few times and then give a loud squeal before starting. I was able to test drive the car and it runs and shifts through all gears fine. If I try to start with the transmission in gear the starter just grinds (whines?)

im assuming it’s something with the starter engaging the ring gear, but wanted to post here in case I’m overlooking anything, and will be digging back in this weekend. Any advice is appreciated.

if this is in the wrong sub-forum please let me know and I will move. Thank you.

Sounds like maybe the clutch plate isn't fully disengaging from the flywheel? Did you have the clutch hydraulics disconnected for the service? Bleeding out the clutch line can be tempermental.

I did not. I just removed the slave cylinder and moved it out of the way. What would be the fix if this was the case? Bleeding the slave?

To the next poor soul that lands here for these symptoms. It was a misaligned starter.

loosened the three bolts rotated the starter clockwise and retightened. All good now.
