R59 The Deal
The Deal
When you finally put a package together, can you bargain? Is there a mark-up, and what would be considered a good deal? For example, let's say the package comes to $32,000.... Can I get them down? (Let's assume no trade is involved.)
Even including a trade, what deal did you make?
I would be trading a loaded 135 i (2008, under 50 k with extended powertrain warranty) I will try to work both ends...but I will not give my car up for peanuts, will drive it into the ground before that...

You'll have much more bargaining power if you buy off the lot with existing inventory. Custom builds you actually have to put money down to even get the slot...and while I have heard of people getting the price down, most just get a few freebies thrown in and that's about it. With Roadster production being limited and some dealers having to trade with other dealers for slots...your chances aren't that great. Still, it CAN be done if you show around at more than one dealer.
My build came to 43K and I couldn't get them down any (no trade in, I sold my other MINI outright and put 13K down). Course, I also took their very first JCW Roadster slot back in February! :-)

By all means bargin. Determine a price you want to pay based on invoice and work from there. Have alternatives so you can "walk away".
Sales people are there to sell and use whatever method they can to get you to lay out the cash. You have cash so you have bargaining power.

Never hurts to ask, but you may not like the answer. As for your BMW, by all means, try for a private sale.
When it comes to Roadsters, if you "walk away" there is someone right behind you to take your spot. Maybe in a year things will be different. There are a handful of 2012 Roadsters sitting on lots. You might be able to negotiate some on one of those. And as the weather turns cold, northern dealers will either trade allocation slots or maybe give a discount.

Btw, I think I personally will never buy this roadster as I am not fond of the styling. Great if you like it.
What others have said is probably true... no great deals on R59s. I will say that you are at an advantage with the 1 series in that usually "home brand" dealers will give you more for a trade. For example if you took the BMW to a MINI dealer (which is most likely a BMW dealer as well) you will get ~$500 or so more than if you took it to say an Audi dealer. I have found this to be true when trading cars at dealers. Of course for the most money you would want to sell it yourself.

You need to factor in the sales tax. If you have a trade that is worth say, $12,000.00 cash from CarMax and your dealer offers $11,500.00. The bottom line on the deal is lower if you trade because your sales tax is calculated on the price of the new car less the trade.
Bottom line, do the math.

We were able to get with a same-marque dealer to execute a purchase order for our trade at a different dealership. It got us about $1500 more on our trade and it worked like we were trading it in at the same place. It was a little weird, but I guess it happens a lot. It was crazy... We traded a VW at a BMW dealership for a used Porsche. The VW dealership who executed the purchase order really wanted the car and the BMW place really didn't (they didn't want the Porsche either which was also good). The cool bit was that we still got the tax credit from the trade! Sweet.

I'm hoping to get the dealer to throw in the Nav option and/or the parking/reverse radar. Those are two things that I can live without, but would love to have.
It may be around $1200 MSRP, but the dealer cost might be only a fraction of that.

Franny B, where do you see that? I'm thinking about financing a small part of my 13 Roadster S when it gets here in a few weeks and want to make sure I know what's being offered before starting that conversation. Thanks!
This is the link I saw: http://www.miniusa.com/#/shop/SpecialOffers-m
It sez 2012 models, so, come to think of it, it may just be for dealer stock since you can't get a 2012 ordered anymore.
Just ask the dealer... They should know the exact deals. The ad does mention the Roadster where it was specifically excluded when we bought ours.
Shop around on rates. There are some good deals out there.
