back noise from exhaust

i have had my R59 for 2 wks now. i recently put it in sport mode and every time i change gears...the exhaust has a 'kick back'. i'm not sure of the right word to use.. but it shoots like a gun. small bang or bang sputter sputter. She drives fine in normal mode and even in sport mode drives perfect. is this sound normal? and only when i let off the gas to change gears for that split second. anyone?

It's deliberate, and totally awesome!

Indeed, "it's supposed to do that".

Sport mode triggers the "pop, burble" sounds on deceleration that you're hearing. You should hear it with any "sport" / louder exhaust system, even more pronounced.

Odd thing: back in the day, tuning air-cooled VWs, we'd work hard to make sure our cars *didn't* do this, usually a sign of an exhaust leak.

Jealous!
It's to mimic the tuned sports car sound of the 1960's. Some don't like it, but the vast majority who weigh in on the subject do. I think now that you know it's not an issue, you will grow to like it. Kind of like my first gen power steering pump noise. Once I realized it wasn't a problem, it became an endearing feature of the car.

As you decelerate, you can give the accelerator gentle taps to coax a little more "burble" out of it!

In fact it's only the S that pops to this extent - because of the new N18 engine. The JCW does not pop anywhere as much..

Nope, only the Cooper S has the new engine, the JCW is still on the older N14...evidently the JCW Countryman will be the 1st JCW to come with the updated engine.

Safe to assume the Justa will not make the popping sound?
