Hello all,

I’m new to the community. We had a Mini Cooper S back in 2003 that the family enjoyed. Lots of fun! I’m looking at a 2012 jcw R58, manual transmission with around 55 thousand miles on it. New clutch installed in the last 6 months and extensive service records from mini dealers. The car has had several owners which is expected given the age and model of car.

I live far away from the vehicle but I got the dealer to send me a clip of the engine idling. Does this one sound normal? I’m on guard for the typical timing chain death rattle and this one has me on the fence. I’m not opposed to having the vehicle worked on but want to go in with eyes open.

I’d love some feedback if anyone gets a chance.

First impression, that engine bay is exceptionally clean. Second take, sounds awfully quiet, even with my volume turned all the way up.

 

I appreciate the feedback. Yeah, the vehicle is really clean over all and has a good service history with Mini from the looks of the Carfax report. I was listening to the idle video on my phone, which sounded a little noisy and suspicious. When I play the video on my PC with a decent set of speakers, it sounds WAY quieter.

I am making plans to move forward with the purchase I think.

Even though it has the N14 engine, being a clean JCW with a decent history report, it should treat you well as long as you keep up with the maintenance.
